Odds Favor Brian Daboll Being New York Jets’ Next Head Coach After Gase Fired

The New York Jets are looking for a new coach.

The Jets fired Adam Gase on Sunday night, not long after a season-ending 28-14 loss at the New England Patriots. The Jets finished 2-14 and were 9-23 in Gase’s two seasons.

Hurt More Than Helped

The biggest reason the Jets hired Gase was to help develop quarterback Sam Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The offense was awful under Gase. The Jets finished last in the NFL in total yardage in both seasons and last in points scored in 2020.

After the Jets got off to a 1-7 start last season, they won six of their last eight games to finish 7-9, providing hope they could have a breakthrough in 2020. Considering Gase was favored to be the first coach fired back in September, he actually lasted much longer than many expected.

However, the Jets were an abomination, losing their first 13 games before posting back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Rams and Cleveland Browns. It was the second-worst season in team history behind their 1-15 finish in 1996.

Daboll the Favorite

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is the favorite to replace Gase and the biggest why is the way he has developed quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen was also taken in the 2018 draft, four spots after Darnold. While Darnold has sputtered in his three seasons, Allen has blossomed into a Pro Bowl player.

In leading the Bills to a 13-3 record and the AFC East title this year, Allen set franchise records with 4,544 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes. The Bills also averaged 31.3 points a game, the second-best mark in the league.

By comparison, Darnold threw for 2,208 yards and nine touchdowns, though he also missed four games. His completion percentage was 59.6 and he averaged 6.1 per attempt compared to Allen’s 69.2 and 7.2.

Daboll, 45, has seven seasons of offensive coordinator experience in the NFL. He also spent 11 years on Bill Belichick’s staff with the New England Patriots, serving as a defensive assistant, receivers coach and tight ends coach.

Who’s On the List?

The Jets have asked for permission to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

Daboll figures to be on their radar along with Ravens DC Don “Wink” Martindale, Tennessee Titans DC Arthur Smith and Los Angeles Rams DC Brandon Staley. Among college coaches, the Jets reportedly have interest in are Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh and Florida’s Dan Mullen.

Conventional wisdom says the Jets will likely hire another offensive coach. He could either help aid in Darnold’s development or take the Jets in a different direction if they use the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft on another quarterback.

However, various reports indicate the Jets are not limiting themselves to one side of the ball.

Jets owner Woody Johnson will not be involved in the interview process as he is currently serving as the United States Ambassador to Great Britain. Instead, his brother and CEO Christopher Johnson will conduct the search with team president Hymie Elhai and general manager Joe Douglas.

Keep an Eye On Smith

Daboll and Bieniemy seem like the most logical fits for this job but they may have better opportunities elsewhere. The Jets have not been to the playoffs since 2010, the longest current drought in the NFL, and are seen throughout the league as a dysfunctional franchise.

A value play here could be Smith at +1400.

While Smith is not as well known as some of the other potential candidates, the Titans have finished 10th and fourth in the NFL in scoring during his two seasons as OC. He also has gotten high marks for turning quarterback Ryan Tannehill into a Pro Bowler.

As a bonus, Smith’s father is the founder of FexEx, which could mean free shipping for the Jets.
