  • Todd Gurley has been a touchdown machine through seven games
  • Gurley has his sights set on setting an NFL TD record
  • The Rams’ remaining schedule offers Gurley a strong chance to surpass Tomlinson

Todd Gurley has been an absolute monster during the Rams perfect 7-and-0 start to the campaign, racking up 686 rushing yards (most in the NFL) and posting 14 touchdowns, also tops in the league. His incredible production has oddsmakers bullish on his chances of setting a new single season touchdown record, currently held by LaDainian Tomlinson who reached paydirt 31 times in 2006.

Gurley Is Getting Stronger as the Season Wears On

Just how good has the tenth overall pick from the 2015 draft been? Ridiculously good.

In fact, he’s tied with Priest Holmes for the most total TDs (14) through a team’s first seven games of the season in the Super Bowl era. Nine of those trips into the end zone have come in three games (three TDs each against his NFC West opponents in Seattle, San Fran and ‘Zona) and he’ll be playing each of those teams once more.

LaDainian Tomlinson vs Todd Gurley Statistical Comparison

LaDainian Tomlinson
VS
Todd Gurley
1.75 AVG Rush TD/Game 1.57
0.19 AVG Rec TD/Game 0.43
11 TD Through 7 Games 14
1.94 AVG TD/Game 2.00
31 Projected TD Total 32

The incredible battering Ram has been better across the board than the all-time record holder with the exception of average rushing TD’s per contest. In LT’s sensational season, however, he posted just three receiving scores, a total Gurley has already matched. Tomlinson reached the end zone only eleven times through seven games, but then went on a massive tear racking up 20 TDs in his next seven tilts, surprisingly failing to reach the end zone in his last 2 games.

The Rams’ Remaining Schedule Provides Big Opportunities

With the exception of the Bears and Eagles in weeks 14 and 15 the Rams do not face super stingy run defenses. Five of the Rams remaining opponents aren’t even ranked inside the top 21 in yards allowed per game.

Rams’ Remaining 2018 NFL Schedule

Team Rush Yds Allowed/Game Rank Rush TD Allowed Rank
vs Packers 22 16
at Saints 1 16
vs Seahawks 24 8
vs Chiefs 23 29
at Lions 30 8
at Bears 4 1
vs Eagles 2 8
at Cardinals 32 32
vs 49ers 13 26

Where will the challenge be presented to Gurley along his quest? With three more games against those NFC West foes he should easily feast on weak defenses.

Will Todd Gurley Set the All-Time Touchdown Record?

Gurley has the luxury of playing only one cold game in the last two months (at Soldier Field in Chicago, the Detroit game is in a dome.) After a challenging slate of upcoming games (GB, NO, SEA, KC), he won’t face a team that currently has a winning record in the last five outings. Bank on Gurley besting Tomlinson to set the all-time TD single-season record.
