Biggest Week 1 Spread Move

We’ll start with the contest that has seen the biggest shift to its point spread since the opening lines were released. The Cleveland Browns opened up as 2.5-point underdogs in Carolina, but early support from sharp bettors has pushed this line all the way to Cleveland -1.5.

If you find yourself compelled to bet on the Panthers do it quickly because the latest betting splits suggest the line could move back towards Carolina.

Since the Panthers have moved to underdogs, 77% of the against the spread bets and 79% of the ATS money is backing Carolina. The Panthers will be trotting out new quarterback Baker Mayfield, who’ll be making his first Carolina start against the team that drafted him. Mayfield was 4-10 against the spread last season with Cleveland and owns a 24-36-1 career ATS record.

Biggest Week 1 Total Moves

When it comes to over/unders for Week 1, just one game has seen its total move more than 1 point. Shockingly, it’s the Broncos versus Seahawks game. The Broncos vs Seahawks total has jumped from 42.5 to 44.5 which is surprising since Seattle profiles as one of the worst offenses in the league. Given the current betting splits, however, the line movement might not be finished.

60% of the over/under bets and 73% of the money wagered on the total is on the over. Denver operated a vanilla offense last season, but the addition of Wilson and new head coach Nathaniel Hackett has bettors believing this will be a high-octane unit.

Smallest Spread of the Week

In terms of the smallest favorite on the board, that honor belongs to both the Browns and the Green Bay Packers. We’ve talked enough about the Browns versus Panthers contest, so let’s now focus on Aaron Rodgers and co. The Pack opened up as 2.5-point road favorites in Minnesota, but early Vikings support has moved the line back to Green Bay -1.5.

The Packers are one of the most heavily backed public teams each and every year, and considering they’re 14-7-2 straight up against Minnesota in their last 23 meetings, expect some buyback on Green Bay.

Biggest Spread of the Week

The Indianapolis Colts are Week 1’s biggest favorite, although the line has moved against them throughout the week. Indy opened up as 8.5-point road favorites in Houston, but that number is down to Indy as 7.5-point favorites.

The Texans are once again expected to be one of the worst teams in the league, and the current betting splits suggest they’ll close as a bigger underdog than they are as of Friday. 76% of the ATS bets and 72% of the ATS money wagered is backing the Colts.

Smallest Total of the Week

If there’s one game to skip this week it’s got to be the 49ers vs Bears matchup. The game opened with a minuscule 41.5 point total, and it’s since fallen to 40.5. Our SBD formula prediction is San Fran winning 23.9-10.9.

Chicago’s offensive line grades out as the second worst in the NFL per Pro Football Focus, while the Bears didn’t add any significant offensive pieces to replace the loss Allen Robinson. Justin Fields is a major work in progress and there’s simply no reason to believe Chicago will put up a lot of points.

On the other side, San Francisco operated one of the slowest offenses in 2021 and should be among the league leaders in rushing rate once again while they break in new starting QB Trey Lance. This game will be a slow-paced slog, and if this total moves at all prior to kickoff it will be further down.

Biggest Total of the Week

The contest pegged for the most points in Week 1 is the Chiefs versus Cardinals tilt. The total opened at a slate-high 53.5 points and hasn’t moved, but don’t be surprised if it inches up slightly before kickoff.

Kansas City and Arizona each ranked top-11 in scoring last season and top-eight in total offense. They also ranked fourth and eighth respectively in the pace of play, while the Chiefs led the league in pass rate over expectation. Expect a lot of points to be scored in this one.
