Rodgers, Packers Find Common Ground

It was his concern over a contract that going forward was offering no guaranteed money that put Rodgers, 37,  on the outs with the only NFL employer he’s known. Since the Packers were unwilling to trade the reigning NFL MVP and he has no desire to retire from playing, it was apparent the only solution available would be Rodgers remaining in Green Bay.

He has three years remaining on his pact with the Pack but none of it consists of guaranteed money. Rodgers raised his concern over this situation shortly after the 2020-21 campaign came to an end.

He’d gone into radio silence as far as any public comments on the issue were concerned. There was speculation the Rodgers had played his last game for Green Bay. The Denver Broncos were listed as a potential trade destination for the Green Bay QB.

Is Rodgers One and Done?

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter is reporting that the reworked contract between Rodgers and the Packers will provide an opt-out scenario following this season. That clause could pave the way for his departure from Green Bay.

The redesigned contract also reportedly guarantees that the Packers can’t designate Rodgers with the franchise tag, which would tie him to the club. As part of the restructuring, the team will gain more cap space for the immediate future. That should aid the Packers in negotiating a new contract with All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.

As soon as his new deal is finalized, word is that Rodgers will report to Green Bay’s training camp.

Unrest Within the Ranks?

Ian Rapoport tweeted that Rodgers had told those close to him that he was coming back and would be playing with the Packers this season. This news rubbed some Packers players the wrong way, feeling their QB was keeping them in the dark.

All-Pro offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, the man charged with protecting Rodgers’ blind side, vented his frustrations on social media. “Wow. Guess we aren’t ‘close people,'” Bakhtiari posted on Twitter as a quote tweet accompanied by Rapoport’s tweet.

Should You Back the Pack?

Let’s look at this situation from the big picture point of view. The past two seasons, the Packers got to the NFC Championship Game. That was with everyone on the team on the same page, pulling the rope together.

Last year, it featured a career year from Rodgers, home-field advantage for the NFC title game and Green Bay still couldn’t seal the deal.

This season, they go into the year with a lame-duck QB. He’s done everything in his power to end his time with the Packers. Evidently, that’s causing unrest inside the team’s locker room.

This isn’t Tom Brady. For all his impressive numbers and his three NFL MVP awards, Rodgers has won as many Super Bowl rings in his career as Joe Flacco, Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson.

Bet the Packers at your own peril.
