The Chargers (4-2) were off last week after having their three-game winning streak end in Week 6 when they routed 34-6 by the Ravens in Baltimore. The Patriots (3-4) have won two out of three following a 1-3 start.

The Chargers are favored by four points in the game that will be televised by CBS.

Patriots vs Chargers Recent History

The Patriots whipped the New York Jets 54-13 last Sunday at home. Rookie quarterback Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes in his first 300-yard game and Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor ran for two TDs each.

In the loss to the Ravens two weeks ago, the Chargers did not score on their first five possessions. They also failed to score at least 16 points for just the second time in second-year quarterback Justin Herbert’s 21 career starts.

The Patriots have won six games in a row since the Chargers’ last win in the series in 2008. Last year, New England routed the Chargers 45-0 in Inglewood despite amassing just 291 total yards. Los Angeles managed just 258 yards.

Patriots Offense vs Chargers Defense

Jones leads all rookie in in completions (174), passing yards (1,779), touchdown passes (9) and passer rating (92.8).

He is the only rookie quarterback in NFL history to complete over 70% of his passes in five of his seven games. The rookie record is nine games by Dak Prescott for the Dallas Cowboys in 2016.

Harris has taken some of the pressure off Jones with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. Harris can become the first Patriots running back with three 100-yard games in a row since Corey Dillon in 2004.

The Chargers are last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed at 162.5 a game.

The Chargers are fourth in pass defense and 19th in overall defense. The Patriots are 16th in total offense, 23rd in rushing offense and 14th in passing offense.

Chargers Offense vs Patriots Defense

Herbert was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, but had his worst game came against the Patriots.

It was the only game in which he did not throw a touchdown pass. He managed to complete just 26 of 53 passes for 209 yards while being intercepted twice and finished with a career-worst 43.7 quarterback rating.

Nevertheless, Herbert has the respect of Bill Belichick.

The Chargers are 12th overall in total yards, 25th in rushing yards and seventh in passing yardage this season. The Patriots defense ranks 12th, 11th and 16th.

Patriots vs Chargers Injury Report

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler (hip) is questionable after missing practice Thursday and Friday. He is second in the AFC with seven touchdowns and fifth among running backs in scrimmage yards a game (99.7).

Justin Jackson will start if Ekeler can’t go. Jackson has carried just 10 times for 22 yards this season and caught seven passes for 34 yards.

Chargers defensive lineman Justin Jones (calf) could possibly be activated from injured reserve after missing five games.

Patriots linebacker Brandon King (thigh) has been ruled out.

Patriots vs Chargers Prediction

The Patriots are starting to put things together as midseason approaches. Belichick clearly made the right choice drafting Jones and Harris is emerging as one of the NFL’s top rushing threats.

While New England might not win the game outright, it should keep things close against the Chargers.

The Pick: Patriots +4 (-106)
