The New Orleans Saints got a big boost on Tuesday when quarterback Drew Brees announced on Instagram that he’ll be returning to the team. The New Orleans Saints Super Bowl odds shifted down just a tick, shortening from +1400 to +1200.
Are they worth of a bet in this spot or are they a team to avoid?

Brees Was Expected Back
One of the big reasons why we didn’t see a big shift in this betting line is because Brees was expected to return to the Saints. They still have to figure out what they’ll do with his contract but whatever the case may be, they’re going to make sure it doesn’t impact their free agency (or as little as possible).
The oddsmakers were widely expecting Brees back, which is why the Saints Super Bowl 55 odds were already at +1400. Had they expected him to move on, the Saints’ futures would have been much further down the board.
Saints Won’t Get Hit Too Hard in Free Agency
One of the most important aspects for the Saints maintaining their standing (they were a 13-3 team last year) is keeping the roster together. For the most part, they don’t have any huge free agents hitting the market but they will likely lose a couple of pieces that will have to be replaced either through the draft or elsewhere.

Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is a goner, guard Andrus Peat and linebacker A.J. Klein will likely get paid more elsewhere and the secondary could get hit with the losses of Vonn Bell, Eli Apple and P.J. Williams. The Saints did acquire Kiko Alonso and Janoris Jenkins, so they have players ready to fill in.
Overall, this isn’t too bad of a situation. The Saints can keep a guy or two, and then use the 2020 NFL Draft to try and find some replacements. However, the overall foundation of the team will be just fine.
What’s the Best Bet?
I was on the Saints last year as I thought they’d make a solid Super Bowl run before falling short in their first playoff game. I still think they’re a good bet as they have the makeup of a team with staying power.
In my view, when betting these NFC teams to challenge for the Super Bowl, you want to go with a team that’s consistently in the running. The Saints have won at least 11 games in each of the last three years, notching 13 in the last two. I’m expecting another double-digit result in 2020 and a dedicated focus to not slip up in the playoffs again.
When you look at all of the teams around the Saints, teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, the Saints are the team that’s been most consistently good in the regular season of late. That’s all you can ask for when betting the Super Bowl futures this early.
