49ers, Ravens Remain Betting Favorites

The 2024 NFL playoffs have been full of surprises already, but the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens remain the favorites to meet in Super Bowl 58 according to most sportsbooks.

The 49ers and Ravens both earned first-round byes after finishing the regular season with the best records in the NFC and AFC respectively. At 13-4, the Ravens posted the NFL’s best overall record behind NFL MVP odds favorite Lamar Jackson. The 49ers went 12-5 to pace the NFC.

Entering the divisional round this weekend, the 49ers remain the Super Bowl favorites at +175 odds. The Ravens are right behind them at +275. Both teams’ odds shortened slightly since our last Super Bowl odds update. No other team currently has shorter than +500 odds.

The 49ers will face the Packers on Saturday, where they’ve been instilled as 10-point favorites. The Ravens, on the other hand, are notable 9-point favorites against the Texans. Oddsmakers expect both teams to take care of business and inch closer toward a Super Bowl clash.

Longshot Teams See Odds Improve After Wild Card Upsets

The wild card round saw three upsets alter the playoff landscape. The #7 seeded Green Bay Packers went into Dallas and dominated the Cowboys, advancing with a 48-32 win. The #4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the defending NFC champion Eagles 32-9, ensuring there would be a new conference representative in the Super Bowl.

The Packers’ average odds to win the Super Bowl improved from +9500 to +2700 after the upset victory, while the Buccaneers’ odds shortened from +7000 to +2775. Both teams remain longshots, but they’ve seen around a 2% increase in their implied chance to win the entire thing.

Another big shocker came from the #4 Houston Texans, who took down the Cleveland Browns 45-14 behind rookie QB CJ Stroud. First-year Texans coach DeMeco Ryans was already garnering Coach of the Year consideration, and his team’s playoff run has vaulted their Super Bowl odds all the way down to +2500 (from +6000).

The #6 Detroit Lions won their first playoff game since 1991, beating the LA Rams 24-23. The Lions also saw their championship odds shorten from +2000 prior to the playoffs to +850 currently.

Oddsmakers view the 49ers, Bills, Ravens, Chiefs and Lions as teams with a realistic chance of winning the Super Bowl this season. They all have at least a 10% implied chance of winning, while the bottom three teams (Texans, Packers, Bucs) have a lower than 4% implied chance.

Best Bets to Win Super Bowl 58

Out of the favorites, we like the value on San Fransisco entering the NFL Divisional round. They have been the most consistent team all season long and have the best defense in the league. The 49ers are allowing 17.5 points per game and feature difference makers in Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and Talanoa Hufanga.

San Francisco has been able to put together a truly impressive roster, in part because their starting quarterback Brock Purdy is on a rookie contract. Purdy’s passing rater was fifth in the league this season, while the 49ers’ two-headed rushing attack of Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell continues to gash defenses.

We’re also giving out SF as a Super Bowl best bet in part because Baltimore could be on upset alert in the Conference Championship if the oddsmakers’ divisional round projections go according to plan. While SF is our overall best bet, we like the value on Buffalo at +500 as a smaller sprinkle.

The Bills have overcome early struggles to play their best football late in the year, including thumping Pittsburgh 31-17 in the AFC wild-card round. Buffalo will get to host Kanas City next weekend, with a win setting up a potential showdown with Baltimore.

The Ravens would be favored over the Bills, but Buffalo would be entering the game riding a 7-game winning streak. Josh Allen led the Bills past the Ravens in their most recent meeting, and we think this team is worth a Super Bowl wager before their odds potentially shorten significantly.

Best Super Bowl 58 Bets:

  • San Francisco 49ers (+175)
  • Buffalo Bills (+500 sprinkle)
