  • Which teams should you be fading in your NFL off-season wagers?
  • Are the New York Jets being overrated because of the addition of QB Aaron Rodgers?
  • Can the Los Angeles Rams rebound from a dismal 5-12 campaign?

It won’t be long now until the NFL off-season is reaching a conclusion and training camps are opening. Every team will be taking the field certain that they are legitimate contenders in the Super Bowl odds. Most of them will be wrong about that fact.

Which teams should you be looking at as the pretenders for the 2023 NFL season? What clubs will it be wise to fade in NFL future bets such as season win totals and playoff odds?

The following teams are certainly looking as though they should be categorized into this group.

2023 NFL Odds

Team Super Bowl Odds Conference Odds Division Odds
New York Jets +1500 +900 +250
Green Bay Packers +5000 +2200 +380
Los Angeles Rams +7000 +3000 +850
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +8000 +4000 +800
Tennessee Titans +10000 +6000 +380

To emphasize how quickly life changes in the NFL, two of the last three Super Bowl winners are among the teams that you should be fading this season.

Jets Are Counting On Rodgers

No team was making a more major splash during the NFL off-season than the New York Jets. The deal that saw them acquire three-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers instantly saw the club’s Super Bowl betting line shorten from +4000 to +1400. Is it fool’s gold, though?

Other than Tom Brady – and really, is it fair to compare Brady to mere mortals – no Super Bowl-winning QB has gone to a new team late in their career and led that team to Super Bowl glory. John Unitas (Chargers), Joe Namath (Rams) and even Joe Montana (Chiefs) couldn’t make it happen. The Jets even went this route previously with Brett Favre and saw it fail spectacularly.

New York brought in receivers Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman to catch passes from Rodgers. But the Jets didn’t upgrade at tackle. Rodgers was sacked 32 times last season in Green Bay and could be in for another rough ride. As well, if something happens to Rodgers, it’s back to Zach Wilson at QB.

In the tough AFC East, the Jets might still be #3 behind the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. In the NFL playoff odds, bet them to miss the postseason at +110.

Packers Are All About Love

Moving on from Rodgers, it’s time for Jordan Love to take over under center in Green Bay. But the Packers allowed four of their top six receivers to leave town, doing little to fill this void.

Green Bay was 8-9 with Rodgers as starting QB last season. Play the Packers to go under 7.5 in the NFL win totals at a betting line of -105 in NFL futures.

Rams Will Continue to Sink

Less than two years removed from their Super Bowl triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Los Angeles Rams are a shell of that title-winning team. Seven LA starters departed in the off-season, including stars like CB Jalen Ramsey and LB Bobby Wagner.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford remains under center but at 35 looks to be a shell of his former self. He finished up last season posting a 4-6 record and a passer rating of 87.4. The Rams will be hard-pressed to equal last season’s 5-12 slate. LA’s win total is set at 6.5. The under at -110 looks to be the correct play when betting on NFL futures.

Is There Life After Brady for Buccaneers?

Going from seven-time Super Bowl winner Brady to Baker Mayfield at QB is only scratching the surface of the issues surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winners of the Super Bowl just three years ago, Running back Leonard Fournette, TE OJ Howard and Cameron Brate and WR Scotty Miller are also gone from last season’s roster.

The Buccaneers won the weak NFC South with an 8-9 slate a year ago. Tampa Bay is -450 to miss the playoffs in the NFL futures odds and while the odds aren’t good, the likelihood of this wager coming in is strong.

Remember When the Titans Were Good?

Four playoff appearances in five seasons. Five successive winning campaigns. It all came crashing down last season as the Tennessee Titans finished 7-10.

It only figures to get worse in 2023. QB Ryan Tannehill and RB Derrick Henry have likely left their best years behind. Will Levis isn’t ready to be an NFL starting QB. Tennessee’s win total is set at 7.5. The under is the play here at -135.
