Canucks Dangerous at Home

The Canucks are being listed as +105 home underdogs against Toronto on Tuesday despite having an impressive 7-3-3 record at Rogers Arena this season. Vancouver is coming off consecutive home victories in which they exploded for 11 goals. The Leafs, meanwhile, haven’t been a good road team, sporting a 7-9-0 record away from Scotiabank Arena.

While the two teams split the season series last year, the Canucks have dominated the Leafs at home in recent years. Vancouver is 10-1  in their 11 games against Toronto at Rogers Arena, including three consecutive victories dating back to 2016.

Frederik Andersen is expected to get the call in goal for Toronto, and he’s struggled in his NHL career against the Canucks. The Danish netminder only has one win in five starts against Vancouver and has posted a lackluster .873 save percentage in those contests.

Leafs Uneven in Sheldon Keefe Era

The Maple Leafs under new head coach Sheldon Keefe are still trying to find their identity. The team started strong after Mike Babcock was relieved of his duties, but they’ve been struggling of late. The Leafs have managed just one win in their last three games and have been held to two or fewer goals in three of their last four contests.

Despite having elite offensive talent such as Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander, the Leafs are currently out of a playoff spot and trailing the Carolina Hurricanes for the second Wildcard spot by five points.

A big reason the Leafs are out of a playoff spot is due to their defense. They just can’t keep the puck out of their net and rank ninth-last in goals against per game (3.26). This is a big problem when up against an explosive offensive team like the Canucks, who are averaging 3.33 goals per game.

Canucks Power Play Could Be Difference

Vancouver enters this game with the fourth-ranked power play in the entire NHL. They are operating at 27.2% efficiency and will present a big challenge for a Leafs penalty kill that ranks in the bottom-fifth of the league (76.5 %). The Leafs have been shorthanded 10 times in their last three games and can’t seem to stay disciplined.

A big reason the Canucks lead the NHL with 31 power-play goals is because they also lead the NHL with 114 penalties drawn. The speed and skill of players such as Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser force opponents into tough spots, as Pettersson alone has drawn 17 minor penalties this season.

This special teams matchup is an ideal one for the Canucks. Elusive puck-mover Quinn Hughes is the power-play quarterback and is rising in the Calder Trophy odds. The young blueliner is at close to a point-per-game pace through 29 games and thrives alongside Pettersson and Boeser against weak penalty kill units.

Betting Advice

Given the Canucks history of beating the Maple Leafs in Vancouver and their advantage in the special teams matchup, the Canucks moneyline is the play here.

Toronto is still trying to figure things out under Sheldon Keefe, while the Canucks have won two straight at home and looked explosive offensively in those contests.

Look for Pettersson, Hughes and Boeser to have a big game and capitalize with the man advantage to lead Vancouver to victory.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks (+105)
