  • The Penguins face the Blues tonight in a game featuring a 6.5 goal total
  • 17 of Pittsburgh’s last 20 games have exceeded the total

The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to the Gateway City to take on the St. Louis Blues tonight in a game I project to be a high-scoring affair. The over/under is currently listed at 6.5 goals in the NHL odds, and that’s a number I feel is too low for the reasons I’ll break down below.

Pittsburgh has already clinched a playoff berth, but they are desperate to shake off a recent cold streak and find their rhythm before the postseason begins. Meanwhile, St. Louis has been eliminated from the Western Conference playoff picture, and will be looking to end the regular season on a winning note.

Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30 pm ET from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, MO, with ESPN handling broadcast coverage duties.

My favorite bet tonight is over 6.5 goals, a bet you can get at plus-money odds over at FanDuel. If there is one definitive trend defining Pittsburgh down the stretch, it is their involvement in absolute track meets.

The over has cashed in an incredible 17 of the Penguins’ last 20 games. When looking at their situational splits, the numbers become even more compelling. The over has hit in 8 of Pittsburgh’s last 9 games on the road as an underdog, as well as 9 of their last 10 games following a loss. Furthermore, head-to-head history heavily favors a shootout, as the over has hit in each of the last 3 games between these two squads. While the Blues have trended slightly under at home recently, the visitors’ blistering pace and defensive vulnerability make the over the most reliable wager on the board.

The most glaring mismatch per the numbers is offensive production. The Pens, a longshot Stanley Cup odds contender, are lighting the lamp at an impressive rate, averaging 3.52 goals per game compared to a sluggish 2.73 for the home side. This disparity extends to special teams, where Pittsburgh boasts a lethal 24.3% power play. St. Louis is converting on just 17.5% of its man-advantage opportunities and struggles on the penalty kill, stopping only 76.5% of opponent power plays.

Despite the gap in goal-scoring, these two teams are mirror images of each other defensively. Both allow exactly 2.93 goals per game. Neither team is getting elite goaltending; the Penguins are operating with a collective .887 save percentage, while the Blues are only marginally better at .890. With both teams routinely operating with sub-.900 save percentages, high-danger scoring chances should translate directly onto the scoreboard.

Down the middle, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin anchor the Pens top six, but St. Louis is well-equipped to counter. Robert Thomas leads the charge alongside Dylan Holloway and Jimmy Snuggerud. Behind them, Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich provide crucial secondary scoring that Pittsburgh may struggle to contain.

Penguins vs Blues Odds

As mentioned, FanDuel has the best odds on over 6.5 goals as of Tuesday afternoon, while Bet365 offers the best price if you’re looking to back the under. FanDuel also has the top payout on a Pens upset at +175, while DraftKing’s -205 odds on a Blues win are the best in market.

Shifting gears to the NHL props market, where Pittsburgh’s Rickard Rakell has been a reliable offensive catalyst, especially when his squad is looking to bounce back. He has recorded a point in 9 of his last 10 games after a loss, boasting a massive 90% success rate while averaging 1.4 points per game in that span.

On the home side, Thomas remains an elite primary playmaker. Thomas has recorded an assist in 5 of his last 6 games as a betting favorite, good for an 83.3% cover percentage. Additionally, he has tallied an assist in 4 of his last 5 matchups against bottom-10 scoring defenses. With his opponents playing for the third time in four days and giving up plenty of high-danger chances, Thomas is in a prime position to distribute the puck effectively.
