The Dallas Stars have already stolen home ice advantage in their second-round playoff series. The question now is, can they put the Winnipeg Jets in a 2-0 stranglehold tonight in the NHL playoff bracket? Online sportsbooks don’t think so, and I agree.

Per the NHL public betting trends, 69% of betters expect the Jets to hold serve at home tonight, and take a series split back to Dallas.

Stars vs Jets Predictions

My prediction is in line with the market tonight. Winnipeg has been excellent in its own barn all season, and have gotten consecutive quality starts from Connor Hellebuyck. The Vezina Trophy odds favorite stopped 26 of 29 pucks in Game 7 versus the Blues, and followed up that performance with a 21 save effort in Wednesday’s Game 1 loss.

Those numbers won’t win him any awards, but it’s a vast improvement over his first six playoff starts. The Jets yielded less than two goals per game on home ice during the regular season, and are getting some reinforcements back on the blueline. Top defenseman Josh Morrissey is expected to return for Game 2, after sitting out the opener with an upper-body injury.

Winnipeg got captain Mark Scheifele back for Game 1 after a two-game absence, and his presence helped the Jets dictate the play. Winnipeg held the advantage in puck possession and high-danger scoring chances. They limited Dallas to 2.75 expected goals, but were ultimately sunk by the red-hot Mikko Rantanen.

Stars vs Jets Game 1 Advanced Stats

The 28-year-old recorded his second consecutive hat-trick. He leads the playoffs in scoring with 15 points, and set an incredible record in Game 1. Rantanen has now either scored or assisted on 12 straight Stars goals. As impressive as that is, there’s a ton of luck involved. Rantanen scored twice at even strength, despite his line producing only 0.42 expected goals. That marks the second straight game where Rantanen has significantly overachieved, after exceeding his expected goals total by 1.69 in Game 7 versus the Avs.

Bottom line, Dallas needs more contributions from their other skaters. Rantanen has scored six of the team’s last seven goals, and until the other Stars step up, I can’t trust Dallas as a legit Stanley Cup odds contender.

Stars vs Jets Picks

• Winnipeg Jets Moneyline (-135 at Caesars)

Another reason why I’m picking the Jets is because the Stars are playing with fire in their own end. Dallas yielded an average of 33 shots per game over the final third of the regular season, and that has carried over to the playoffs.

The Stars are allowing 34 shots per game in the postseason, the most of any team. They also rank 14th in Corsi For percentage in the postseason, well behind Winnipeg.

The Jets ranked top-four in scoring during the regular season and are way too talented not to make Dallas pay for their underwhelming defense. Back Winnipeg tonight on the moneyline, and also consider betting over 2.5 goals for the Jets.
