  • The Dallas Stars are -154 road favorites against the Ottawa Senators in the only NHL game on the schedule for Sunday, October 17
  • It’s the first game between the two teams since February 16, 2020
  • The Senators have won six of the past eight Senators-Stars meetings – see who we like below

A lot of water has been frozen into ice since the last time the Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars skated on a sheet of it in action against each other.

There was this pandemic thing, for instance. Oh, and the Stars played in the Stanley Cup final. Then they missed the playoffs.

The Senators? Well, they hired Pierre McGuire.

In the first meeting between the only NHL team from the Lone Star State and the squad from Canada’s capital city, it’s the Stars who oddsmakers are making the -154 road favorite in the NHL picks. Dallas is 0-2-2 in the last four games the club has played at Ottawa.

The Senators opened their regular season campaign edging the Maple Leafs 3-2 on home ice. Dallas was a 3-2 winner at Madison Square Garden over the hometown New York Rangers.

Dallas was 3-3-5 in the second game of back-to-backs last season. Meanwhile, Ottawa went 0-8-2 in that scenario.

Big Troubles In Big D

Following their surprising roll to the 2019-20 Stanley Cup, where they were vanquished by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Stars were entering the 2021 campaign brimming with hope and optimism they’d be a contender in the NHL playoff odds. It didn’t take long for it to be downgraded to hopelessness.

A COVID-19 outbreak during training camp scuttled the start of the Dallas season. The Stars were left making up games in an already compacted season. They got behind the eight ball and never could get out in front again. Dallas was injury riddled throughout the season. The club lost 12 of the first 17 games of the season and missed out on postseason action.

The early indications are that 2021-22 might be more of the same for the Stars. John Klingberg, the club’s top defenseman, was injured in a collision behind the net with Rangers forward Chris Kreider just 3:30 into the season. He returned to try and play but eventually left with what the team termed a lower-body injury.

Goaltender Braden Holtby also departed from the opener after being smacked in the head with a stick. However, the former Vezina Trophy and Stanley Cup winner was back in the net for Saturday’s tilt in Boston.

Murray Out For Senators

Ottawa is also dealing with goalie injury issues. Matt Murray, the club’s #1 netminder, was placed on IR after being felled by a non-COVID illness. He’ll be sidelined until at least October 21.

Ottawa forward Brady Tkachuk also isn’t expected to play until October 21. Tkachuk signed a seven-year, $57.5 million contract with the Sens on Wednesday. He was a holdout through the entire NHL preseason.

Trendspotting

The NHL betting trends show that Ottawa is 6-2 in the last eight games against the Stars. Dallas is 2-2-4 through those same eight games.

At the Canadian Tire Center, the Sens have won four in a row from the Stars. Dallas is displaying an 0-2-2 mark over that span.  Prior to that stretch, the Stars fashioned a four-game winning streak at Ottawa.

Stars defenseman Ryan Suter played his 1,200th NHL game on Saturday. He’s fourth among active NHLers in games played.

Pick: Ottawa Senators (+130).
