There are Formula 1 races where strategy is fairly straightforward. Tire degradation behaves normally. Weather forecasts are trustworthy. Drivers politely stay on the racing surface. Everyone calmly executes a clean one-stop strategy while the commentators discuss aerodynamics in soothing tones.

The Canadian Grand Prix is not one of those races.

Instead, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve specializes in wild. Walls sit inches from the racing line, waiting to collect carbon fiber souvenirs. Safety cars appear like clockwork. Rain clouds routinely hover over Montréal like the weather itself entered into this DraftKings contest. And now, with modern battery deployment systems turning every straightaway into a temporary drag strip, overtaking opportunities arrive in places that previously required a signed waiver and a priest.

DraftKings is rolling out a $20 contest paying $20,000 to first place, meaning thousands of us are about to willingly trust our emotional stability to weather radar, pit strategy, and whether a billionaire racing team remembers how intermediate tires work under pressure.

This year’s edition already feels delightfully unstable.

There’s rain in the forecast, which immediately turns every F1 DFS lineup into a roulette wheel wearing green intermediate tires. The scheduled 4 p.m. ET start is wonderfully American-friendly, allegedly arranged to avoid conflict with the Indianapolis 500. Of course, with weather threatening both events stateside, there’s a reasonable chance degenerates everywhere will simply end up operating two televisions and aging six years in an afternoon.

Up front, George Russell starts from pole position for the third consecutive year in Montréal after another absurd qualifying lap. Russell converted pole into victory here last season, and Mercedes looks very capable of making everyone uncomfortable again. Alongside him sits teammate Kimi Antonelli, who arrives riding the momentum of three consecutive Grand Prix victories.

The McLaren Formula 1 Team duo occupies Row 2, while Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen wait ominously in Row 3 like movie villains the script forgot about for 20 minutes.

Canadian Grand Prix DFS Strategy

This lineup begins with a fairly simple assumption: Mercedes controls the race from the front.

We expect George Russell to dictate the pace early after securing pole yet again. The McLarens likely hold a slight advantage launching off the grid, but Circuit Gilles Villeneuve features a relatively short sprint into Turn 1, making it more difficult to immediately overwhelm the pole sitter before the field compresses into the opening braking zone.

If Russell survives the opening lap with the lead intact, Mercedes suddenly gains a very realistic path to another dominant afternoon.

Of course, there is one tiny concern.

Things became a little tense between Russell and Antonelli during the Sprint race, which almost certainly resulted in at least one deeply uncomfortable Mercedes meeting afterward involving Toto Wolff calmly explaining the concept of “not detonating both cars simultaneously.”

There are really only two possible outcomes now. Either the Mercedes pair races each other extremely carefully Sunday afternoon, or Antonelli decides peace was never an option and sends both Silver Arrows directly into the Canadian wilderness by Lap 6.

For DFS purposes, we are choosing to believe Toto served as a calming presence.

Assuming internal combustion remains limited strictly to the engines, the constructor pairing becomes enormously appealing.

F1 DFS Picks: Teammate Outperformance Plays

The rest of the lineup focuses heavily on drivers consistently outperforming their teammates throughout the weekend.

Arvid Lindblad has looked comfortable immediately. He finished eighth in FP1, qualified ninth for the Sprint, advanced forward to eighth in the Sprint itself, and now starts three positions ahead of Liam Lawson for Sunday’s Grand Prix. At his current salary, Lindblad simply offers too much upside relative to cost, especially if rain introduces additional attrition.

Isack Hadjar follows a similar profile. Realistically, asking him to defeat teammate Verstappen outright probably requires a small meteor strike. But Hadjar remains close enough on the grid to at least create bonus point potential if strategy, weather, or safety cars scramble the order.

Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto has quietly demolished teammate Pierre Gasly throughout the weekend. Colapinto qualified 13th for the Sprint while Gasly languished back in 19th. Colapinto then climbed forward to finish ninth in the Sprint itself while Gasly spent most of the session conducting a personal sightseeing tour of the back half of the field in 20th place.

Frankly, Alpine appeared to recognize Gasly was cooked fairly early and essentially converted his race into a mobile tire laboratory, cycling through compounds and gathering data like an F1 intern.

Finally, Nico Hulkenberg continues doing what Nico Hulkenberg has done for approximately 400 years: quietly extracting respectable results while outperforming teammates and surviving chaos. He again qualified ahead of teammate Gabriel Bortoleto, and in a race where rain and safety cars feel extremely likely, simply having competent veterans capable of avoiding catastrophe becomes a legitimate DFS strategy.
