The Edmonton Elks have surprised thus far in the CFL season, winning three of their first four games to be tied with the Saskatchewan Roughriders for first in the West Division. Their opponents Thursday night are the Ottawa Redblacks, who have had a dreadful start, losing all four contests. Edmonton has won the last three meetings between these two squads, dating back to last season.

The Elks are coming off their first loss of the season, a 36-24 defeat to the BC Lions, while the Redblacks dropped a 27-22 tight battle vs the Roughriders. Continue reading for the odds, analysis and my prediction for the first game of the Week 6 CFL slate.

Thus far in the CFL season, offense has reigned supreme, with quarterback play being very strong. The two pivots playing Thursday night are grizzled vets, who have been good-not-great so far on the campaign. That’s why I’m not sure both clubs can combine to put up a ton of points on the board.

Edmonton’s running back Justin Rankin could single handily take over this duel, as he leads the CFL with 406 rushing yards (for a gaudy 7.7 yards per carry average). He’s also put up 254 receiving yards.

However, perhaps the BC Lions found something to at least slow him down somewhat last week, where he had just seven carries for 19 yards (but put up 100 receiving yards). In 14 of the last 17 meetings between these two squads, the under 58.5 point total has been the play. That’s largely due to the fact Edmonton hasn’t made the postseason since 2019, and Ottawa just once since then. The offenses haven’t been especially stellar for quite some time.

Recent H2H Results: EDM vs OTT

The veteran QB’s have been solid, but not spectacular. Five quarterbacks have thrown for more touchdowns, and the Elks Cody Fajardo ranks fifth in passing yards and Jake Maier of Ottawa is eighth. The Redblacks have accumulated the second fewest points in the league, and their counterparts have the third fewest. Edmonton has also been solid defensively, surrendering the third fewest points per outing, making me bullish on the under point total hitting.

Edmonton enters this skirmish as a hefty 6.5 point favorite. They’ve won by seven or more points just once in four outings on the campaign. Despite being 0-and-4, Ottawa has covered that spread in their latest two defeats. The spread is a healthy 58.5 points. Each squad has gone 2-2 in going over/under that number on the season.
