  • Russia have performed beyond expectations, and have a chance to match their 1966 result
  • Croatia has arguably been the most impressive team and haven’t lost in eight matches
  • Kick off is Saturday July 7 at 2:00 p.m. EST from Sochi

Russia has performed beyond expectations, and are coming off a game where they defeated Spain in penalties. Croatia has yet to be defeated in the World Cup, and have arguably the best midfielder in this World Cup with Luka Modric. This game is set to be filled with action as Russia will be urged on by their fans.

The Russians

Russia doesn’t seem to be playing like the lowest ranked team at the World Cup – 70th in the world. Shockingly Russia defeated the talented Spain squad, alerting the final eight teams that they are not to be taken lightly.

In the all of Russia’s matches, they have possessed less then 40% of the ball. The team seems happy to play defense and kick the ball deep into the opposing team territory for temporary relief.

Russia played with three defensive backs against Spain but look for them to revert back to their normal 4-5-1 as Yuri Gazinskiy and Denis Cheryshev return to the starting lineup. Yuri Zhirkov left the Spain match with an injury and is doubtful to play Saturday. Fedor Kudryashov or Alan Dzagoev could be his replacement at left back.

The Croatians

Croatia has dominated the 2018 FIFA World Cup, exemplified by their 3-0 win over Argentina. Denmark gave made an admirable effort in shutting down Croatia’s offense, but couldn’t defeat them in penalties.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have been the best midfield duo in the World Cup. They have the ability to break defensive lines and counter any formation lapse.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have been the best midfield duo in the World Cup. They are both world class players who have the ability to break defensive lines and counter any formation lapse. Russia will have to shutdown this pair to have any chance against Croatia.

Expect Croatia to play their usual 4-5-1. They should dominate possession and have multiple chances throughout the game. The only lineup change will be left back Ivan Strinic who is in doubt after an injury against Denmark.

Croatia hasn’t lost a meaningful soccer match in eight games. The team has more talent then Russia, the question is if they can use that talent to shutdown the home crowd and team.

Russia’s World Cup has finally come to an end. Russia has yet to face players like Modric and Rakitic, whose talent will be to strong for the stingy Russian defense. Expect a quick start by Russia, but after half Croatia’s class will break through and end Russia’s 2018 World Cup run.
