Barca’s 3-1 defeat in El Clasico at the weekend makes this an even bigger game for the Catalans as they look to appease their disappointed fans, while it was a better weekend for the Yellow Submarine who beat Osasuna 2-0.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Prediction

Barca’s outstanding early-season form took a hit at the weekend when they lost the first El Clasico of the season. Real Madrid’s 3-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeau was Barcelona’s first La Liga setback since opening day when they drew with Rayo Vallecano. In between, they won seven league games on the spin – scoring 20 and conceding just one along the way.

But it was a disappointing evening in the capital for Barca, with Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde putting Los Blancos 2-0 up before Ferran Torres pulled one back. Any hope of grabbing a point was extinguished when Rodrygo’s 91st-minute penalty sealed the points.

Barca’s UCL Struggles

It ended a disappointing week for Barca who, in midweek, only managed a 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League – a result that put in doubt their chances of qualification for the knockout stages.

With the possibility of an early from the UCL, it is therefore doubly vital that Barca keep the pressure on Real to keep alive their chances of a first La Liga title since 2018-19. Home games against the likes of Villarreal simply have to be won.

Inconsistent Start for the Yellow Submarine

For the Yellow Submarine, the 2-0 victory over Osasuna on Monday was timely given their inconsistent start to the campaign. After winning just three of their opening eight games, they badly needed a win to reignite their season and it arrived thanks to a brace from Arnaut Danjuma – his first goals of the season.

Prior to Monday’s success, Unai Emery’s team had failed to build on two wins from their first two games, with disappointing losses against close rivals Real Betis and Real Sociedad and dropped points against Cadiz and Getafe. As a result, they fell out of the top six and the Europen places.

UEFA Conference League Success for Emery’s Men

But, despite their inconsistency in La Liga, things have gone well for Villarreal in the UEFA Conference League. Four wins from their opening four games have seen them open up a seven-point lead at the top of Group C and assure themselves of a place in the knockout stage of the tournament.

While the task of winning in the Camp Nou on Thursday looks huge, Villarreal will draw on the fact they won 2-0 there last season. It was their first win over Barca in 27 attempts, but for those players in the side that day – and there will likely be at least six starting on Thursday – it will act as a reminder that it can be done.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Team Lineups and Injuries

Barcelona Projected Lineup: Ter Stegen, Alba, Pique, Kounde, Roberto, Pedri, Busquets, Gavi, Fati, Lewandowski, Torres.

Injuries & absences: Araujo, Depay, Christensen.

Villarreal Projected Lineup: Rulli, Pedraza, Torres, Albiol, Femenia, Parejo, Capoue, Lo Celso, Morales, Danjuma, Baena.

Injuries & absences: Coquelin, Foyth, Moreno (G).

Barcelona vs Villarreal Picks

It takes a brave bettor to wage against Barca at the Camp Nou any day, let alone when they are hurting after experiencing defeat in El Clasico. Xavi’s men will be bursting to put right some of the wrongs of last Sunday and it’s hard to make a case for anything beside a home win.

Therefore, taking a punt on the score may be the way to go and, given Villarreal’s tight defense, a low-scoring Barca win looks the most likely outcome.

Picks: Barcelona to win (-215) / Barcelona to win 2-0 (+800) / Under 2.5 goals (+140)
