BVB Hot on Bayern’s Heels

While Bayern Munich has dominated the Bundesliga in recent seasons, BVB has been the closest challenger but you have to go back to 2012 for their last title win. This season looks likely to be their best chance for a while to pip the Bavarians to the title and a win on Friday will take them to within three points of the current champions.

BVB’s quest for the Bundesliga crown took a surprise turn for the better last Friday when Bayern surprisingly lost at home to Borussia Monchengladbach, and Dortmund was able to make the most of this opportunity by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 – three goals in the final 19 minutes being enough to secure them the points after going in at halftime 2-0 down.

Outstanding Home Forn for BVB

The next couple of weeks could be make-or-break for Marco Rose’s team who, following the Freiburg match, have upcoming games against Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen. Three wins, or even two wins and a draw, from these games and they set themselves up perfectly for title challenge over the coming months.

While there is still a long way to go before BVB can even contemplate the prospect of their first championship for a decade, they have in their favor some outstanding home form, with a record of eight wins from their nine games; scoring 26 goals and conceding just 12 in the process. They have only the fifth-best away record, so it will likely be at Signal Iduna Park where the title is won and lost.

Champions League Chance for Freiburg

For Freiburg, it has been a season that has exceeded all expectations. Their 8-6-4 record has taken them to 30 points and fourth in the table and, as a result, they are well and truly in the hunt for the Champions League places; a significant improvement on their 10th-place finish in 2020-21.

Christian Streich’s team opened the campaign with an outstanding 10-game unbeaten run and even though that run ended with three consecutive defeats, they regained their composure ahead of a tricky-looking December during which they lost just once and which included a 6-0 away win against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Freiburg the Away Day Specialists

Their single defeat in the run-up to Christmas came against Hoffenheim, who surprisingly beat them 1-0 in Freiburg, but that disappointment was offset by a fine 2-1 home win over fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen just prior to the winter break. They were unable to repeat these heroics,  however, on their return to action last weekend, when they were disappointed to draw 2-2 at home with relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld.

While Freiburg’s home form has been hit-and-miss, their away form has been very good and is the basis upon which their Champions League quest has been this season has been built. Theirs is the second-best away record in the Bundesliga, with 15 points having been earned from their nine matches, and worth noting too is they have beaten BVB in each of their last two meetings.

Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg Prediction

This will be close and we have to weigh up BVB’s excellent home form against Freiburg’s outstanding away record. For Dortmund, the incentive of closing the gap on Bayern may just be the deciding factor and despite the visitors’ confidence on the road, I see value in a low-scoring home win.

Picks: Borussia Dortmund to win (-205) / Borussia Dortmund to win 2-1 (+700)
