Matchday 3 in the Bundesliga begins on Friday with an intriguing clash between Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna Park. The kick-off is set for 2:30 PM EST.
BVB suffered a shock defeat to Freiburg last weekend, while Hoffenheim played to a goal-filled 2-2 draw with Union Berlin. Dortmund will be looking to end a three-game winless run at home against the visitors, losing once and drawing twice.

BVB in Poor Form
Despite starting off the Bundesliga campaign with a huge 5-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, Dortmund has been disappointing since. They were completely outplayed in a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup a week ago Tuesday, then also lost to Freiburg.

The biggest problem for Marco Rose’s side right now is their vulnerability at the back. BVB have conceded five times in the last two games across all competitions, showing absolutely zero solidity in front of keeper Gregor Kobel.
Dortmund gave Freiburg a dangerous set-piece in the sixth minute of the match, which midfielder Vincenzo Grifo buried in fine fashion with a breathtaking strike from well outside the box. The Black and Yellows then made another crucial mistake early in the second half which allowed the hosts to double their lead on the counter-attack.

In the final third, Rose’s men had no shortage of chances, they simply just couldn’t find the back of the net aside from the own goal from Freiburg midfielder Yannik Keitel. What’s even more surprising is that Erling Haaland hasn’t netted or supplied an assist in his last two outings after being involved in all five goals in the Frankfurt victory. The Norwegian will be looking to get back on track in front of the BVB faithful on Friday before heading out on international duty.

While Dortmund’s recent form against Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna hasn’t been spectacular, the side didn’t lose to them last term, drawing their most previous meeting in February and winning 1-0 in October of 2020.
Can Hoffenheim Run Riot at Signal Iduna?
It’s been an eventful beginning to the season for Hoffenheim, who finished in 11th place in 2020/21. Sebastian Hoeneß’s squad smashed Augsburg 4-0 on matchday one, then played to a hard-fought draw with Union last Sunday.

Hoffenheim quickly equalized within the first 15 minutes after the visitors scored an early opener. Jacob Bruun Larsen then clinically put away a picture-perfect through ball from Croatian Andrej Kramaric in the 30th minute to give the hosts the lead. Berlin ultimately drew level through a Taiwo Awoniyi volley from inside the box, with both sides taking away the lone point.
TSG keeper Oliver Baumann made several world-class saves which kept his side in the game. Firing home goals hasn’t been an issue for Hoffenheim thus far, already hitting six in two league appearances while also netting three times in the DFB-Pokal. Kramaric has been the leading catalyst up top, tallying four assists while Bruun Larsen has scored twice in as many matches.

Prior to last season, Hoffenheim was on a five-game unbeaten run against Dortmund. In fact, BVB has only won nine of 26 clashes with their Matchday 3 opponents. That’s one of their lowest win rates among all German opponents aside from Bayern. Needless to say, Hoffenheim has lots of reason to feel confident ahead of Friday’s encounter.

Dortmund vs Hoffenheim Prediction
Although Dortmund has struggled on home turf against Hoffenheim, they’ve secured five straight victories at Signal Iduna and have tasted defeat just once in their last eight games there.
The odds are heavily favoring BVB to secure the full three points on Friday, but I expect it to be a tightly contested clash. Also, six of the last eight meetings between these two clubs have hit the ‘Over’ in goals. With that being said, there’s a very good chance that will happen again.
Pick: Borussia Dortmund to Win by 1 (+255), Over 2.5 Goals (-275)
