Bayern Munich vs Hertha Berlin Prediction

Bayern’s dropped points at Monchengladbach on opening day were a surprise to everyone but they bounced back well in game two with a hard-fought but deserved 3-2 win over Cologne at the Allianz Arena. The reigning Bundesliga champions have struggled so far in defense – usually one of their strengths – but have also suffered because most of their squad was away at the summer’s Euros or Copa America.

A slow Bayern start was therefore not a huge surprise, but after a thumping 12-0 win in midweek over lower-league Bremer SV in the German Cup they appear to be getting back into their normal routine. Serge Gnabry, who scored twice against Cologne, will again be key, as of course will the club’s all-time leading scorer Robert Lewandowski.

Hertha, meanwhile, is at the bottom of the table after defeats in their opening two games and also has to contend with a poor record against Bayern – losing their last four games against the champions. However, having narrowly avoided the drop last season, Hertha looks better equipped to do better this season, but I do not expect their campaign to kick-start tomorrow. Bayern will have too much firepower.

Pick: Bayern to win 3-0 (+900)

Union Berlin vs Borussia Monchengladbach Prediction

Two winless sides meet in Berlin’s Stadion An der Alten Forsterei as Union enterain Borussia Monchengladbach. Union started the new campaign with two draws  – against Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim – and so will be keen to kick-start their season with three points. Their cause has not been helped however by a hectic early-season schedule; one that involved a Thursday night Europa Conference League playoff against KuPS which they drew 0-0 (and progressed 4-0 on aggregate).

And against a Monchengladbach team who have only earned a point so far, Union will be made to work hard if they are to get their first win of the campaign. Die Fohlen suffered the embarrassment of a 4-0 thrashing by Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, but this came off the back of their only point so far coming from an opening day draw with Bayern. Any team that can take points off the champions is a dangerous opponent.

Much here will depend on which version of Monchengladbach turns up but, for me, if they can tap into the spirit and resolve they found on opening day, I see the visitors being the ones to get their first three-point haul of the season.

Pick: Borussia Monchengladbach to win (+185)

Wolfsburg vs RB Leipzig Prediction

The Wolves flying start to the campaign sees them top of the table but this will be their sternest test so far, with RB Leipzig looking to emulate or even better their second-place finish of last season. Wolfsburg, who themselves finished a very creditable fourth in 2020-21, has kicked off the campaign in style with wins over Bochum and Hertha but has injury worries ahead of Sunday’s game with Astier Vranckx, Paulo Otavio, William, and Bartosz Bialek all likely to be missing.

RB’s season got off to a shocker with an unexpected 1-0 defeat away at Mainz on opening day, but they responded well last weekend with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Stuttgart. Having been Bayern’s closest rivals last season, Leipzig will be looking for a repeat this time around and will know every dropped point is costly. They have a couple of injury concerns with Dani Olmo and Angelino, but this is still a quality and expensively acquired RB squad; one designed to push Bayern all the way.

While Wolfsburg will understandably come into this with confidence, RB’s defense was the best in the league last season and that shows no sign of changing. They will make life tough for the Wolves and with the away win still in plus money that, for me, is where the value lies.

Picks: RB Leipzig to win (+120)
