Blues Jockeying for Position

The Blues return home after suffering a stunning 3-0 loss to Sheffield United on Saturday that leaves them with a tenuous grasp on a spot above the line on the Premier League table going into their final three matches of the 2020 campaign.

Prior to Manchester United’s Matchday 35 date with Southampton on Monday afternoon, Chelsea maintained slim control of third place on the table, just a single point ahead of Leicester City, and a mere two points up on the surging Red Devils. However, with two of their final three league contests coming at Stamford Bridge, the Blues maintain solid -300 odds of finishing among the top four and securing a berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea Offense Steadily Producing

While Chelsea is now under intense pressure to pick up points, they should have little trouble doing so when Norwich comes to town. The Blues have outscored opponents by a wide 11-1 margin during their current four-win surge on home turf, a run that has featured a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in FA Cup action back in March, and 2-1 win over Manchester City in an EPL matchup on June 25.

The Blues failed to generate offense in last weekend’s loss to the Blades, but have otherwise filled the net with regularity, averaging a healthy 2.33 goals per match over their previous nine outings across all competitions. And while Willian has scored in just one of the club’s past eight league road dates, the Brazilian midfielder has been steady when playing at Stamford Bridge, getting on the scoresheet in each of Chelsea’s past three home matches. That trend leaves him positioned as an attractive +120 bet to score at some point in Tuesday afternoon’s contest.

Canaries’ Fate Sealed by Weekend Loss

Losers in eight straight contests in all competitions, including a trio of road matches, Norwich City will be playing for pride when they hit the pitch on Tuesday as distant +2000 underdogs. The Canaries are coming off a crushing 4-0 loss to West Ham United over the weekend that assures they will finish the campaign at the bottom of the table, and will be relegated to the EFL Championship next season.

Offensive production has been non-existent during Norwich’s freefall into the EPL basement. The Canaries have tallied just two total goals during their eight-match losing streak, and have been particularly brutal on the road in their first season back in the Premier League since 2016. The club has recorded just one win in 17 league road outings, and have been held off the scoresheet in six of their past eight matches away from Carrow Road.

Norwich Hobbled by Feeble Offense, Injury-Riddled Defense

Since emerging as one of the top stories early in the season after scoring five times over his first three EPL contests, attacker Teemu Pukki has been silent, failing to pot a marker over the past 11 matches. Norwich’s woes have been further complicated by a rash of injuries, with the club’s defensive depth getting particularly hard hit by the loss of veterans Sam Byram, Grant Hanley, and Christoph Zimmerman.

One thing the Canaries do have going for them is a track record of closely fought matchups with Chelsea. Norwich fell just short in a 3-2 home loss to the Blues back in August, and have played the Blues to a draw in a pair of FA Cup clashes in January 2018. However, with their fate this season already sealed, and with Chelsea having so much to play for, look for the Blues to outclass Norwich on Tuesday afternoon.

Picks: Chelsea -2.0, -2.5 (-115); Chelsea to record a shutout win (-130); Willian to score anytime (+120)
