  • Quarter-final spots are on the line this week with the second legs of the round-of-16 set to play out
  • New York City FC looks best placed among MLS teams to join New England in the last eight
  • Read on for a look at all the odds, along with three highlighted betting previews and best bets

It’s still up in the air of course, but it’s possible that 50% of the quarter-final lineup for the CONCACAF Champions League could consist of Major League Soccer clubs if those North American teams can make home-field advantage count this week.

While the New England Revolution are already through after Haitian club Cavaly FC was forced to withdraw from the tournament over a visa issue, New York City FC look poised to join them, up 2-0 from the first leg heading into the return fixture, to be played at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. On top of that, Seattle returns home following a goalless draw in Motagua, while both CF Montreal and the Colorado Rapids will have to overturn one-goal deficits against Santos Laguna and Guatemalan outfit Comunicaciones.

With the second legs set to begin Tuesday night, many of the powerhouse Mexican clubs failed to get the first-leg advantages they were hoping  for, setting up the possibility for some upsets. This is fairly commonplace in soccer betting. Here’s a look at all the odds, followed by detailed previews of three of the contests.

NYCFC vs Santos de Guapiles Prediction

New York sports betting launched earlier this year and bettors in the Empire State will be able to bet on their local team in this week’s CCL action. The principal concern for the defending MLS Cup champions will be avoiding defeat here, which will punch their ticket to the quarter-finals. Last week’s 2-0 win in Costa Rica, with a brace from Taty Castellanos, should ensure that New York City can take a laid-back approach to this game. They know their opponent will have to be the one pushing the tempo.

While the Pigeons are yet to begin their title defense, Santos de Guapiles haven’t exactly started their own season with any kind of positive momentum. They have lost three of the first five games of the Costa Rican Clausura, rooting them to the bottom of the table, having scored just five goals in those games.

Midfielder Santiago Rodriguez will miss the game for NYC after his red card in the first leg. While Alfredo Morales is a doubt after contracting COVID-19. Santos de Guapiles has no injuries to  report, but  a number of players will be missing after running into visa issues and missing the trip to Los Angeles,

Best bet: NYCFC -1.5 (+185)

CF Montreal vs Santos Laguna Prediction

Although Montreal didn’t get the result it was looking for in Mexico last week, Santos Laguna only shaded the first leg by a solitary goal. They have hardly set Liga MX alight in the early going of the Clausura. Santos Laguna is rooted to the bottom of the table and is the only team still awaiting a first win, having drawn two and lost four of its first six games.

Even better for the home side’s chances on Wednesday at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in Canada, the Mexican team has conceded 13 goals in those six games. This is tied for the joint-worst defensive record in Liga MX.

The MLS side will be missing injured forward Mason Toye, but new signing Kei Kamara will be in contention for this match. He’ll be vying to lead the attack alongside the likes of Romell Quito. However, CF Montreal are yet to start their league campaign, and so might still be a little rusty, so will likely need the home support to get them going here.

This game is also the fourth meeting between the two teams. Santos Laguna now holds a 2-1 edge in the series following last week’s victory.

Best bet: 1-1 Draw (+260)

Colorado Rapids vs Comunicaciones Prediction

If it wasn’t for an 89th-minute winner from Karel Espino, Colorado would have returned home for the second leg with a decent result under its belt. As it is, a 1-0 deficit is hardly disastrous. The ability to play the second leg at home on Wednesday evening should be exactly the kind of boost the team needs to find its way to the quarter-finals.

Solidly mid-table after eight rounds of the Guatemalan Clausura, Comunicaciones will need to muster something special here to preserve or extend its advantage. A number of its players – including Espino – were unable to make the trip to the United States because of visa or COVID-19 vaccine issues.

Meanwhile, Colorado is waiting on the fitness of goalkeeper Clint Irwin, while Braian Galvan is out with an ACL tear.

Best bet: Over 2.5 goals (+110)
