An Expectant Wembley Awaits

A win here for England would take them through to the knockout phase – and the form guide and odds suggest this is likely – but this is the oldest rivalry in soccer, and nothing can ever be taken for granted in this fixture. England vs Scotland games overflow with pride and passion, and if Scotland prevails in adversity at Wembley it would not be for the first time.

This is the first time the “Auld Enemy” have faced each other in a major tournament since the 1996 Euros – also at Wembley – when the English won 2-0 but were pushed all the way by a spirited Scottish performance.

England’s opening match against Croatia was tight but was a game in which Gareth Southgate’s men always had an element of control. They had to be patient though and in the end, it was decided by a single goal, scored by Raheem Sterling in the 57th-minute with an assist from the outstanding Kalvin Phillips.

Southgate Relies on Youth

Southgate’s young squad handled the pressure of the occasion well and made light of the expectation and demands of a noisy, if only quarter-full, Wembley. Against a vastly experienced Croatia team – one that beat them in the semifinal of the 2018 World Cup – England was able to prevent Croatia from dominating possession, something they crucially failed to do in St Petersburg.

Against Scotland, England will have the majority of the ball but will need to be patient again as Scotland is guaranteed to play with fire in the belly and be set up to stifle the England ebb and flow, and deny them time and space on the ball. This will not be a free-flowing, end-to-end affair and that will be to Scotland’s advantage.

Heartbreak for Scotland

Scotland’s wait for a place in the finals of a major tournament has been a long one, and not since the 1998 World Cup in France have they graced the international stage. All of which made the 2-0 defeat by the Czech Republic on their opening day a blow for the Scots, who had earmarked that game as a must-not-lose.

Steve Clarke’s men started the match well and asked questions of the Czechs early on – skipper Andy Robertson firing over the bar when he probably should have scored – but a defensive lapse just three minutes before half-time allowed Patrick Schick to head the visitors ahead. It was harsh on Scotland, who deserved at least to be level, but disaster followed seven minutes into the second half when Schick spotted Scotland keeper David Marshall off his line and spectacularly lobbed him from halfway.

Despite rallying well and creating a few chances, especially after the introduction of Che Adams, Scotland was unable to respond and a 2-0 home defeat was hard to take and not how the Scots had dreamt of their return to the big stage.

England vs Scotland Best Bet

The English start as odds-on favorites with good reason but this will be nothing like the stroll some are predicting. Scotland will look to deny England the time and space to play their expansive soccer while putting pressure on an English defense that has undergone several personnel changes and is regarded as their weak link.

An early goal for England would be the Scots’ worst scenario – and could make for a long 90 minutes for them – but if they can avoid this and gain a foothold, as they did against the Netherlands in a pre-tournament friendly, then they could have some joy. The return of Kieran Tierney will also give the Scots a massive boost, so the draw here should not be ignored. In fact, at +410 this is where the value lies.

Pick: England and Scotland to draw (+410)
