LAFC vs New England Preview

New England, despite a long history in MLS, is off to their best start in franchise history. This is the first time they’ve ever won both of their opening two matches dating back to when they joined the league in 1996.

Bruce Arena’s Revolution side started their season with a 1-0 win in Charlotte, followed by a 3-0 home win over Houston last week. New England is among the league leaders in shots on target with ten so far through two matches.

With their first match of the season postponed due to winter weather, Steve Cherundolo’s LAFC only took to the pitch for the first time last weekend. They received their championship rings, raised some banners and then quickly jumped all over Portland leading 2-0 after 34 minutes and taking a 3-0 lead after 52. Giorgio Chiellini got his first-ever MLS goal to open the scoring, and Carlos Vela and Kwadwo Opoku also opened their 2023 accounts. The Timbers made things interesting by battling back with goals in the 62′ and 84′ minutes but eventually lost 3-2.

LAFC then hit the road in midweek to play Costan Rican side LD Alajuelense in the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). Cherundolo fielded a first-choice lineup and Denis Bouanga netted three times to pace LAFC to a 3-0 win in Costa Rica. With Leg 2 taking place next week, there will surely be some rotation for the California side this weekend.
