Liverpool earned their place among the final eight teams by defeating Germany’s Bayern Munich in the Round of 16. Porto had a slightly easier go of it by advancing past Italy’s Roma.

This will be the second straight year these sides have met in the Champions League. In 2018 it was Liverpool advancing from the Round of 16 due to a 5-0 road win in leg one. The teams drew 0-0 in England in leg two.

Liverpool Eyeing 6th Champions League Title

The Round of 16 pitted together two teams who’ve each lifted the trophy on five occasions between Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

In what was expected to be a high-scoring affair, leg one left over bettors disappointed. A 0-0 draw in England gave Bayern the heavy advantage heading home for leg two.

It was Liverpool who jumped out to the early lead in Germany through a Sadio Mané goal in the 26′ minute. Bayern pulled even with a Liverpool own goal moments later to reach halftime drawn 1-1. However, Virgil van Dijk would score the match winner before a second by Mané sent the Reds into the quarters.

With his two goals, Mané now has three in the competition which ties him with Mohamed Salah for the team lead.

The Champions League title isn’t the only silverware Liverpool have in their sights. The Reds are still involved in the closest of Premier League races with Manchester City. After both teams won this weekend, Liverpool currently occupy first place by two points. However, City have a game in hand and remain in the driver’s seat.

Porto Heavy Underdogs to Advance

With current odds of +8000 to win the Champions League, Porto are by far the biggest underdog left standing in the tournament. By contrast, the next team with the longest odds remaining is Ajax at +3300.

Porto are by far the biggest underdog left standing in the tournament.

Facing Serie A’s fifth place side Roma in the Round of 16, Porto could’ve felt fortunate to have not drawn one of the powerhouse European sides. Still, Roma are no slouches and took leg one by a 2-1 scoreline at home.

The reverse fixture back at Estádio do Dragão saw the same 2-1 result at fulltime, but this time for Porto. With the match minutes away from going to penalties in extra time, Roma conceded a penalty which was finished by Porto’s Alex Telles to send the Portuguese to the quarterfinals.

Telles suffered an injury this weekend and his status remains in question for leg one with Liverpool.

Porto’s Moussa Marega has been key to their Champions League success. The striker is tied for third in the tournament with six goals. He’s also added seven more for Porto in league play.

Much like Liverpool, Porto are currently enthralled in a title race of their own in the Liga NOS. After a 3-2 road win over top four side Braga this weekend, Porto remain tied atop the table with Benfica on 66 points.

Will Liverpool’s Dominance Over Porto Continue?

The teams have met on three occasions in their head-to-head history for a total of six matches in European competition. Liverpool were victorious in last year’s Champions League, as well as during Champions League 2007. Additionally, Liverpool advanced in the 2001 UEFA Cup.

Overall, Liverpool own an undefeated record of 3-3-0 over Porto.

While last year Liverpool were held scoreless at home to Porto, they surely lacked the motivation to push forward having already gained the 5-0 advantage from leg one.

When looking at betting options for leg one, Liverpool has to be considered given they’re playing at home to a side they’ve never lost to. However, at extremely short odds, the moneyline or to qualify bets only look tempting as part of a parlay.

Porto have scored in each of their Champions League matches this tournament, but they’ve yet to face a side of Liverpool’s quality.

Porto have scored in each of their Champions League matches this tournament, but they’ve yet to face a side of Liverpool’s quality. The Reds were forced to advance from a group which included the likes of PSG and Napoli. Only to be drawn with German giants Bayern last round. Despite all their firepower, Munich scored just once over two legs.

Best Bets: Liverpool -1.5 (-115) & Liverpool to score in both halves (-110)
