On Sunday October 10th, CONCACAF will host their fifth round of World Cup Qualifying matches. It is the second round of matches for this international break, and one that is highlighted by a game between Mexico and Honduras.

The match will be played at the glorious, but daunting Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. This is a ground that holds over 85,000 people and presents some difficult challenges for any opposition. The extreme altitude and pollution make it a breathing nightmare, testing the fitness of every player on the pitch.

Mexico had that same advantage against Canada on Thursday night and failed to seal three points in front of their home supporters.

While they are still level on points with the United States, they have a three goal margin on goal difference holding them back. Surely, Tata Martino and his Mexican side will want to get back on track with a big win against Honduras.

Meanwhile, for Honduras, their World Cup Qualifying campaign has been a nightmare so far. In the July 2020 FIFA Rankings, Honduras was the 62nd ranked side, giving them a bye to the third and final round of qualifying. But, in four matches, they have made a mess of the advantage, failing to even win one. They have managed to earn three draws, but that will not nearly be enough in a campaign like this.

Can Mexico Overcome Their Poor Form?

Firstly, it is undeniably true that Mexico are favorites in this match, and in World Cup Qualifying. They are one of deepest, most talented teams in CONCACAF, and most of the time, it shows.

However, since this summer’s two crushing final defeats to the United States, Mexico have been lackluster. In fact, in their last five Mexico have only managed to win two against the likes of Costa Rica and Jamaica, while drawing two and losing one. Their two stalemates represent their most recent World Cup Qualifying matches against Panama and Canada, two very winnable games.

Furthermore, their draw against Canada was even more so surprising than the rest of the poor performances. This is considering the fact that El Tri had the likes of Raul Jimenez, Hirving Lozano and Hector Herrera back in the starting eleven. Again, they had plenty of chances, but failed to create anything meaningful past Jorge Sanchez’s goal in the 21st minute.

Additionally, the element of the draw that is most surprising is the fact they dropped points at the Azteca. To put it into perspective, this is the first time they have dropped points there since 2017, and also the first time they have ever seen a draw there in World Cup Qualifying. In turn, it begs the question, can they wake up against Honduras?

Honduras Can Play to a Tie

Conversely, while Mexico’s form is questionable, they are still a tall task for Honduras. While Los Catrachos have had a miserable start to their World Cup Qualifying campaign, they play a brand of football which allows them to bogey against larger countries.

In fact, their three draws so far came against Canada, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Even against the United States, Honduras was able to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. While that game ended 4-1 in favor of the Stars and Stripes, Honduras were tough until about the 70th minute. Their antics and style of play makes them hard to play against and even harder to win three points on.

Regardless, the last time these two played it did go in favor of Mexico. El Tri won 3-0 in the Gold Cup thanks to goals from Rogelio Funes Mori, Jonathan dos Santos and Orbelín Pineda. This match was also Mexico’s last win by a margin of more than one goal.

Mexico vs Honduras Best Bet

Overall, the best bet in this match is for Honduras to cover the spread at +1.5 with odds of -110. This bet might not be the most attractive, but it makes the most sense. Mexico cannot be expected to drop points again at the Azteca, but Honduras have to be equally respected with the notion they will keep this close.

Pick: Honduras +1.5 (-110)
