Netherlands vs Argentina Preview

The Netherlands’ comfortable 3-1 win over the USA  to earn their place in the last 16 set down a marker to the rest of the teams left in the competition. It was expected to be a tough test against a young, vibrant US team that is being honed ahead of being the tournament’s co-hosts in four years’ time, but Louis van Gaal’s men handled it perfectly.

Goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and Denzel Dumfries gave them the win with the only blip being a bizarre consolation from Haji Wright. Overall it was a mature, well-measured performance and if repeated on Friday, will make for a compelling contest.

Dutch Are 19 Unbeaten

The Netherlands’ World Cup pedigree is exceptional – especially for a small nation – and even putting aside their legendary team of the 1970s, they have reached the quarterfinals in four of their last five tournaments. In that spell, they progressed to the semifinals in 1998 and 2014 and were beaten finalists in 2010.

In the here and now, their form is also good and they come into this off the back of an impressive 19-game unbeaten run.

The Messi Show

It’s been a mixed campaign so far for the Argentinians, whose desire to win this tournament is magnified by the fact it’s likely to be the last World Cup for the maestro that is Lionel Messi. It’s the one medal missing from his collection and there is a genuine belief that his time has finally come.

Unlike his fellow superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who has had a miserable tournament, Messi has been superb and remains the fulcrum of the Argentina team with his own unique brand of trickery and all-around brilliance. Goals against Saudi Arabia and Mexico proved he’s also not lost his touch in front of goal.

Poor Recent Record Against Dutch

What may be a mild cause for concern for the Argentinians is their less-than-impressive recent record against the Dutch. In their last three matches, they have failed to score, albeit they did beat them in their last meeting – the 2014 World Cup semifinal – via a penalty shoot-out.

Netherlands vs Argentina Team Lineups and Injuries

Netherlands Projected Lineup: Noppert, Timber, Van Dijk, Ake, Dumfries, De Jong, De Roon, Blind, Klaassen, Gakpo, Depay.

Injuries & absences: None.

Argentina Projected Lineup: Martinez, Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Acuna, Fernandez, De Paul, Mac Allister, Di Maria, Messi, Alvarez.

Injuries & absences: Gomez.

Netherlands vs Argentina Prediction

This will be close. Two teams with massive World Cup histories going toe-to-toe, but a key factor here could be the massive support that the Argentinians will have in the Lusali Stadium. The Messi factor too cannot be ignored and a key element of this game will be how the Dutch go about containing him.

For me, with the South Americans still in plus money for the win, there is value right there but it could take extra time and possibly even penalties, so the draw also comes into play.

Pick: Netherlands & Argentina to draw [after 90 minutes] (+215) / Over 2.5 goals (+140)
