Netherlands on a Roll

Netherlands’ emphatic 8-2 win over China sent out a chilling signal to their rivals for Olympic gold and was even more significant when you consider the Dutch opened their tournament with an equally emphatic 10-3 win over Zambia. While neither opponent is among the tournament favorites, the ruthless way they were despatched by the Dutch was impressive.

In the Zambia game, it was a four-goal blitz inside the opening hour that set up the huge win, and, with tiring opponents, they used their extra fitness and technical ability to run riot in the final 30 minutes. Netherlands’ second game was a much tighter affair, as you would expect when Brazil are your opponents, but in an absolute thriller in Rifu, they managed a more-than-deserved 3-3 draw, with Dominique Janssen grabbing a late equalizer for the Dutch.

Huge Goal Difference for the Dutch

That draw with Brazil meant it was almost job done, but in order to top the group they needed to ensure their goal difference was as high as possible and their incredible 8-2 win over China was more than enough.

A goal difference of +13 and a tournament-high goal total of 21, has set Sarina Wiegman’s side up perfectly for a charge to the late stages of the tournament, but the current world champions will push them very hard.

Early Setback for USA

The USA started the tournament as favorites but that 3-0 defeat by Sweden rocked them on their heels, especially as prior to that game they had been on a 44-game unbeaten run. It was not just the scoreline that was emphatic; Sweden was also the better team by almost every metric and was well worth the win.

Vlatko Andonovski’s team bounced back in style though with a brilliant 6-1 win over New Zealand Women in their second game – a win that moved them up into the qualification spots. Goals from Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Christen Press, Alex Morgan, and own goals from Abby Erceg and Catherine Bott were more than enough to steady the ship and set up a decider with Australia.

Repeat of 2019 World Cup Final

The US’s tie with the Matildas in Kashima was a tight affair, as many had predicted, with both teams knowing that a point would probably be sufficient to take both through to the knockout phase, either as runners-up or as one of the third-placed teams with the best records. It was no surprise when the game ended goalless.

Friday’s game is a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final when the USA was at the peak of its powers, and that day goals from Megan Rapinoe and Lavelle – from the penalty spot – were enough to give them a 2-0 win and their fourth world title. While the US will, of course, be desperate to repeat that feat, this is a stronger, more experienced, and technically improved Dutch team.

Netherlands vs USA Best Bet

On paper, this game looks likely to be bursting full of goals with both teams containing the world’s best strikers, but there will be elements of caution, especially early on, as neither team will want to concede in the opening quarter.

This US team, for all its undoubted quality and experience, is an aging one and the Dutch will look to exploit this, especially in the closing stages, when the legs are tired and the lungs are burning. With Miedema in fine goalscoring form, the Dutch will fancy their chances, even if it means being patient and taking their chances late on. While they are still in plus money, the Dutch win is the value bet.
