Over/Under and Spread

These two countries did not find the net with regularity during the group stage, especially the US, who scored only twice. The Dutch scored five goals in their three matches, conceding just once in a 1-1 draw to Ecuador, although they seemed on the back-heel for most of the latter part of that match.

As has been the case for most games, the over/under has been set at 2.5 goals for this one. The looming possibility of extra time does not figure into these odds as this total only reflects goals scored in regular time. Over 2.5 goals is paying +135, while the line on the under is -170 as the oddsmakers see that to be more likely.

Netherlands vs USA Preview

It’s been quite the run for Louis Van Gaal in this stint as coach of the Oranje. They have an impressive 18-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, with their last loss being to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020.

If you didn’t know the name Cody Gakpo, you do now. The PSV striker is tied for the lead in goals so far this tournament with three, having scored in every match so far. He has been in the best form of his career this season and also leads the Dutch league in goals with nine. He should be considered for your picks in the Netherlands vs USA props.

Only 23 years old, you can bet some big European clubs are considering spending big transfer money to bring him into the fold, with none other than Manchester United rumored to be at the top of the list.

For the United States to be successful, marking Gakpo will be imperative. That’s especially important considering the lack of offense the Americans were able to produce in the group stage.

USA Struggles to Beat UEFA Sides in World Cup

Recent history has not been on the Americans’ side when taking on UEFA opponents in the World Cup. They have not beaten a European team in the World Cup since 2002 when they defeated Portugal en route to their best finish in World Cup history when they made the quarter-finals.

They have suffered five losses and also had six draws against European competition since beating the Portuguese in the 2002 Group Stage. However, they can take some confidence from playing England even in their second match of this tournament, not only in the scoreline but also with a terrific performance on the pitch.

The Netherlands and USA have never played each other in this tournament before, but have gone against each other in a number of friendlies with the Oranje taking the first four encounters before the States stunned them with a 4-3 victory in 2015.

Netherlands vs USA Team Lineups and Injuries

Netherlands Projected Lineup: Noppert; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, De Roon, F. De Jong, Blind; Klaassen; Gakpo, Depay

Injuries & absences: None

USA Projected Lineup: Turner; Dest, Carter-Vickers, Ream, Robinson; McKennie, Adams, Musah; Weah, Sargent, Pulisic

Injuries & absences: Pulisic (pelvic contusion), Sargent (ankle)

One of the biggest storylines heading into this clash is the health of the American maestro, Christian Pulisic. The Chelsea man went all out to score the winning marker in the match against Iran, sacrificing his body in the process. Pulisic has stated he will play after having to leave that game and go to the hospital.

It remains to be seen if he participates and how effective he will be. In addition, the Americans also lost another forward to injury in that match when Josh Sargent departed in the 77th minute with an injured ankle. He is also expected to be on the field barring unforeseen circumstances.

Not having either of those players will be a big problem for the Americans. Their lack of finishing has proved to be the biggest issue for them so far with just two goals to show from their first three matches.

Netherlands vs USA Prediction

So far, it appears the Americans have played up and down to the competition but embraced the moment when it matters most. Do they have what it takes to score a major upset and advance to the quarter-finals for just the second time in history?

Although this World Cup has been full of surprises, don’t expect another one here. Van Gaal’s team conceded just once in their first three matches and against an American side who hasn’t scored a lot and has a few knocks to some important offensive players, we see another clean sheet for the Dutch.

Pick: Netherlands Moneyline (Regular Time) (+100) / Netherlands to win 1-0 (+500)
