USA Struggles to Beat UEFA Sides in World Cup
Recent history has not been on the Americans’ side when taking on UEFA opponents in the World Cup. They have not beaten a European team in the World Cup since 2002 when they defeated Portugal en route to their best finish in World Cup history when they made the quarter-finals.
They have suffered five losses and also had six draws against European competition since beating the Portuguese in the 2002 Group Stage. However, they can take some confidence from playing England even in their second match of this tournament, not only in the scoreline but also with a terrific performance on the pitch.
The Netherlands and USA have never played each other in this tournament before, but have gone against each other in a number of friendlies with the Oranje taking the first four encounters before the States stunned them with a 4-3 victory in 2015.

It remains to be seen if he participates and how effective he will be. In addition, the Americans also lost another forward to injury in that match when Josh Sargent departed in the 77th minute with an injured ankle. He is also expected to be on the field barring unforeseen circumstances.

Not having either of those players will be a big problem for the Americans. Their lack of finishing has proved to be the biggest issue for them so far with just two goals to show from their first three matches.

So far, it appears the Americans have played up and down to the competition but embraced the moment when it matters most. Do they have what it takes to score a major upset and advance to the quarter-finals for just the second time in history?
Although this World Cup has been full of surprises, don’t expect another one here. Van Gaal’s team conceded just once in their first three matches and against an American side who hasn’t scored a lot and has a few knocks to some important offensive players, we see another clean sheet for the Dutch.
