Portugal’s Route to Knockout Stage

The Portuguese were far from convincing in the group stage. They only managed a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their first match as heavy favorites. They put the boots to overmatched Uzbekistan (5-0) in their second, but were again held to a draw (0-0) against Colombia, who would go on to win the group with that result.

Cristiano Ronaldo, now 41 years of age, scored a brace against Uzbekistan. He’s the only Portugal player with more than one goal after the round robin.

Croatia’s Route to Round of 32

Croatia’s tournament started abysmally when they were badly outplayed for 90 minutes in a 4-2 loss to England. But they showed championship mettle in their next two fixtures, taking down Panama (1-0) and Ghana (2-1) to earn second in Group L.

Petar Sucic, Nikola Vlasic, Ante Budimir, Martin Baturina, and Petar Musa each tallied once in the group stage for Croatia.

Croatia’s own 40-something maestro, Luka Modric, looked his age against England but was instrumental in the two victories.
