With the qualifying matches running on Friday and Saturday, the 2022 Italian Open officially kicks off on Sunday with the Round of 64. Novak Djokovic heads in as the No. 1 seed in the ATP tournament, while 2021 champion Rafael Nadal, who is ranked No. 3, will be looking to defend his crown after beating the Serb in the final a year ago.

Djokovic, Nadal Land in Same Half of Draw
Djokovic earns an automatic berth into the Round of 32 where he will face the winner of Aslan Karatsev vs. South African Lloyd Harris. The Serbian has won this tournament in Rome a total of five times. He still has the chance to win his 38th ATP title in Madrid as well this weekend.

Nadal, a record-breaking 10-time champ in the Italian capital, just lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid quarterfinals after a six-week break due to a rib injury. He could have a tough second rough matchup in Rome against John Isner if the American gets past his opening round clash with a TBA opponent. Norwegian Casper Ruud, who is ranked fifth, is a potential quarterfinal opposition for Nadal. Ruud loves clay.
Can’t Sleep on Zverev, Auger-Aliassime
Zverev is in the Madrid semifinals on Saturday and he’s also ranked as a No. 2 seed in Rome. The German hasn’t won a ton of titles in his career, but he always finds himself in the latter stages of most tournaments. Zverev beat Djokovic in the 2017 final of the Italian Open and could clash with Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

Auger-Aliassime lost in straight sets to Zverev on Friday in the Spanish capital, 6-3,7-5. But, the Canadian did beat Jannik Sinner and Cristian Garin in previous rounds. He’ll head into Rome as a No. 8 seed and is in the same quarter as Djokovic. That means a possible semifinal meeting with the Serb.

This is his first-ever appearance in Rome but Alcaraz is very familiar with the clay courts in Italy, previously playing in different Challenger tournaments across the last few years in the country.
Is Tsitsipas Worth a Bet?
Stefanos Tsitsipas has a quarterfinal and semifinal run to his name in Rome and will face Zverev in the semis of Madrid on Saturday. Grigor Dimitrov is likely his second-round opponent, who the Greek just handled with ease in the third round in Spain, 6-3, 6-4. Tsitsipas is one of the strongest players in the bottom half of the Italian Open draw.

In 15 of the last 17 years, it’s been either Djokovic or Nadal who have won this tournament. Nole is finally back in the groove playing again and Nadal is coming off an injury. I honestly like the Serb to win his sixth Italian Open here as he prepares for the French Open later this month.
