The French Open will begin in September after being postponed in May of this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s French Open will be taking place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France as usual.

Reigning champion Ashleigh Barty has made the tough decision to not travel to Europe from Australia to defend her title, stating the current health risks and not being able to prepare properly for competition as her two main reasons.

Naomi Osaka

As of right now, 2020 US Open champion Naomi Osaka has yet to decide if she will actually be participating in the French Open. She has decided to not compete in the Italian Open, which starts Monday. But this isn’t something to look too deep into. If anything she will rest and be able to prepare for the Grand Slam the following week . Osaka dominated the US Open to win her second title in three years. Not only did she defeat her opponent Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, but she did it in a comeback style, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Clay has been a tough surface for Osaka to find success on. This year she is 0-1, after a devastating loss at the Fed Cup in February, where she lost 6-0, 6-3 to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. With a winning percentage under 60%, Osaka likely won’t be as dominating and in control as she was in every match during the US Open. If she decides to compete in the French Open, she will be one to watch out for. She is never one to count out.

Who Else To Look Out For

When previewing a Grand Slam, it’s almost a guarantee Serena Williams will be mentioned. The 38-year old is still on the quest for her 24th Grand Slam singles title, and is coming off a semifinal appearance at the US Open. She will not be competing in the Italian Open, but as of now, looks to be competing in France.

“I’m definitely going to be going to Paris.” – Serena Williams

In recent years, Williams has actually shut her season down after the US Open. But because of the pandemic, the clay court season has been moved to September. She hasn’t won a French Open since 2015, but does has three to her name. Clay is not Williams’ favorite surface to play on either, but she has still been able to find more success than others.

2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu looks to be doubtful for the French Open. The 20-year old is still struggling with her foot injury, and has yet to make a final decision on whether or not she’ll be participating. She missed defending her title at the US Open this year.

Best Bet

Simona Halep is the favorite going into Paris, with her French Open odds sitting +350. She previously won the title in 2018, and is currently ranked number two in the world. She last competed at the Prague Open, that took place in the middle of August. Halep only dropped two sets the entire tournament, and went on to win the title.

The tournament is an outdoor clay surface, which is the same as the French Open. Halep is one of the most dominant players on clay right now. So despite not competing in the American tournaments that have happened, due to the health risks of flying to the United States, she’s still considered the favorite to win the French Open.

She is competing at the Italian Open, as clay season gets underway. Her play a this tournament will be an indication of what we can expect from her in Paris.

Best Bet: Halep (+350)
