Haddad Maia Stuns Swiatek

Haddad Maia shocked everyone when she downed top-ranked Swiatek, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Thursday. In the match, Swiatek wasn’t her best in the windy conditions, and the 26-year old took full advantage. Swiatek racked up a total of nine double faults, while Haddad Maia just had one.

The Brazilian has had herself quite a year so far, capturing a couple of titles back-to-back, and building a 36-15 record on the season. She is now also the first Brazilian woman to advance to the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 tournament.

Bencic Eases Her Way into the Quarterfinals

Bencic’s tournament started with her opening match being cancelled.

Over the course of her three matches she had yet to drop a set, defeated Serena Williams, and most recently upset Garbine Muguruza. She defeated Muguruza 6-1, 6-3 to earn herself a spot in the quarterfinals.

The gold medalist has had a career defining couple of seasons, as she’s found herself climbing up the ranks and defeating top-tiered players. It took her just over an hour to defeat Muguruza, and that wasn’t out of the ordinary.

The Switzerland native definitely enjoys the hardcourt surface, which lends itself well to her style of play, but this will still most likely be one of the tougher competitions of the tournament, as her opponent is coming in with a lot of momentum.

Second Career Meeting

This will the second time Haddad Maia and Bencic have seen each other in their careers, and the second time this year. Their one and only meeting came at the beginning of the year in Sydney where Bencic won in straight sets.

Bencic leads the head-to-head 1-0.

Haddad Maia vs Bencic Pick

As mentioned above, hard courts have been more favorable to Bencic’s style of play. Haddad Maia is actually only 32-32 on the surface.

This is a match that on paper looks like it could go either way, but with the consistent high level of play Bencic’s been playing at for some time now, makes it hard to not go with her. Yes, Haddad Maia is red hot, and will be coming into this match on a confidence high and with a ton of momentum, Bencic still seems to be the one.

Best Bet: Bencic 2-0 (+100)
