Fresh off the biggest win of her career, Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann will look to extend her improbable run at the Western & Southern Open on Friday (August 20th). Teichmann upset the No. 2 seed Naomi Osaka of Japan in the Round of 16, earning her a date with Olympic champ and countrywoman Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals.

Bencic advanced to the quarters after Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic retired in their Round of 16 match, and opened up as a heavy favorite versus Teichmann.

The two have met just once previously, with Bencic earning a straight sets win in Taipei back in 2017.

Teichmann Stuns Osaka

What makes Teichmann’s run this week even more surprising is that the 24-year-old has flashed little form leading into this event. She’s battled injuries all season and failed to make it past the second round in each of her last nine tournaments, losing her opening match six times. Granted, four of those events were WTA 1000 events and one was Wimbledon, but the other four starts came at WTA 250 tournaments.

This is just the second time in her career she’s advanced to a WTA 1000 quarterfinal, with the first coming this past March, when she reached the final four in Dubai.

Teichmann came in with a very strict game plan to extend the rally’s with Osaka at all cost, and she didn’t waver. The longer points frustrated the four-time Grand Slam champ, and resulted in 41 unforced errors, compared to just 29 for Teichmann.

The Swiss lefty racked up more aces (8-6) and winners (21-17), and converted six of her 12 break point opportunities en route to victory.

The three-setter was a far cry from Teichmann’s first two matches, which she won in dominating fashion. She defeated American Bernarda Pera 6-1, 6-4 in the second round, and whooped World No. 38 Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round. Teichmann won 59% and 66% of the total points in her first two matches, while converting 10 of her 15 break point chances.

Bencic Walks Into Quarters

Bencic was in control of her Round of 16 match versus Muchova when the Czech was forced to retire due to an abdominal issue. Bencic won 54% of the total points, including 77% of the points on her first serve, and converted three of her eight break opportunities.

Similarly to Teichmann, Bencic breezed through the first two rounds, defeating American Shelby Rogers and Czech Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets. Her serve was dominant in both matches, winning 75% and 76% of her first serve points, while saving eight of the nine break points she faced.

Given her pedigree, you’d think she’d breeze past Teichmann on Friday as well, but don’t count out the crafty left-hander.

Teichmann vs Bencic Pick

While it’s true that prior to this week Teichmann had been struggling badly, it’s important to note where her previous nine tournaments were played. Eight of the nine were contested on clay or grass courts, while she’s fared much better on hard courts this season.

She’s made at least the quarterfinal in four of her past six hard court events, and her loss to Bencic four years ago took place on a carpet surface.

Bencic meanwhile, has won nine straight hard court matches herself, including six en route to a gold medal in Tokyo. Four of her Olympic matches went the distance and the way her fellow countrywoman is playing this week, this match could go three sets as well.

Bencic’s biggest weapon is her serve and Teichmann proved on Thursday she’s more than capable of overcoming even the best servers. Only World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty wins a greater percentage of service games than Osaka, and Teichmann broke her six times.

Look for Teichmann to frustrate Bencic, like she did Osaka, by extending points and capitalizing on her break chances. Bencic might prevail, but she’s going to have to work overtime to do so.

Pick: Over 2.5 Sets (+145)
