She lucked out a little with the draw, as she could have faced a seed like Karolina Pliskova or an unseeded danger like Angelique Kerber or Petra Kvitova.

In the end, she draw Jule Niemeier, a young German at a career-high No. 108 in the rankings who also was making her Stuttgart debut.

Andreescu looked in trouble early. But in the end she pulled out a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory that was, given the circumstances, a fairly clean performance.

Andreescu Back With a New Outlook

Andreescu said in the pre-tournament press that she had considered quitting the game at times. As with so many younger players – especially the women, and most especially those who breakthrough to the big time at a young age – she fell prey to basing her self-worth on her wins and losses.

She said she’s back with a renewed love for the game. But all that is theoretical until she actually gets back into the grind of the WTA Tour.

Sabalenka, who is a little older and has won a lot more titles (but not the big ones) is struggling with demons of her own.

That’s why last year’s finalist is fairly far down the list of pre-tournament odds.

A First-Ever WTA Meeting for Andreescu and Sabalenka

As much as both have had great success in the last few years, they have never met on the WTA Tour.

Much of that is due to Andreescu’s lengthy absences from the circuit.

They’ve played each other only once. It was nearly five years ago, in the second round of a $100,000 ITF tournament in the UK on the grass.

Andreescu, who turned 17 that week, was ranked No. 194. Sabalenka, 19, was ranked No. 148.

A few weeks later, both qualified for Wimbledon – the first Grand Slam main draws of their careers.

Upset Written all Over This One

Sabalenka is the favorite, as she often has been in the last two years, even if she has done little in 2022 to justify that kind of confidence in her results.

The Belarusian has lost in the first round of four of her eight tournaments so far this year. And she has won back-to-back matches only twice.

She has won one match since February.

In her favor is the fact that in her Stuttgart debut last year, she reached the final.

But attached to that, of course, is the requirement to defend those points. An early loss to Andreescu could mean she loses two or perhaps even three spots in the rankings, with several players right behind her poised to post big results this week.

On Andreescu’s side is her superior ability to return serve. She’s a threat with every strike. And Sabalenka’s serve has been her Achilles heel this year; that extra pressure might bring on even more double faults than the copious number she’s already produced in 2022.

With the upset brewing, there are a number of other intriguing longshot props beyond just the outright winner.

There is Andreescu winning in three sets (+475). There is Andreescu securing a break in Sabalenka’s first service game (+375).

And the most intriguing one: the player losing the first set coming back to win the match (+360).

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+150)
