Despite barely breaking a sweat this week, 15-seed Cori Gauff is through to the quarterfinals at the WTA National Bank Open in Montreal. The 17-year-old American will face Camila Giorgi of Italy, who’s pulled off three straight upsets to get to this stage.

The action gets underway at 6 pm ET, and will mark the second meeting between these two women this season.

Giorgi vs Gauff Odds

Player Spread Moneyline Total
Camila Giorgi (ITA) +1.5 (-120) +110 O 21.5 (-120)
[15] Cori Gauff (USA) -1.5 (-120) -138 U 21.5 (-120)

Odds as of August 12th at DraftKings.

Not surprisingly, Gauff is a -138 favorite over Giorgi, who entered this week ranked 71st in the world. The way the Italian has played lately however, you’d think she belonged in the top-20.

Giorgi In Fine Form

Giorgi’s strong play this week is a carryover from her Olympic performance in Rome. The 29-year-old was a quarterfinalist in that tournament as well, knocking off both the 11th seed Jennifer Brady and the 5th seed Karolina Pliskova along the way.

She began her week with a straight sets win over 9th seed Elise Mertens, on the strength of a strong service game. Giorgi had a first serve percentage of 70%, winning 70 percent of those points, while yielding just a single break en route to victory.

Next up, she dispatched World no. 38 Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in under 90 minutes, winning 75% of her first serve points and converting 45.5% of her break point opportunities.

On Thursday, she upset 7th seed Petra Kvitova, giving her victories over five top-16 players over the past couple months. Giorgi struck one fewer winner than her Czech counterpart in a hard hitting affair, but won a greater percentage of first and second serve points, and once again converted 45.5% of her break point opportunities.

Gauff Walks Into Quarterfinals

Gauff meanwhile, earned a walkover in her Round of 16 match after Johanna Konta of Great Britain withdrew with a knee injury. It marks the second straight match in which her opponent has withdrawn from, after Russian qualifier Anastasia Potapova retired in the first set in the Round of 32.

The teenager began the tournament with a straight sets victory over Latvian Anastasija Sevastov, beating her for the first time in four tries. The American dropped only five games all match, losing her serve just once, while breaking Sevastov four times.

Gauff has looked relatively sharp in her first WTA Tournament since a COVID induced hiatus, but benefited greatly from Sevastov’s sloppy play. Gauff’s positive test prevented her from participating at the Olympics, meaning aside from last week’s Citi Open exhibition, this is the only competitive action she’s had since Wimbledon.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t been tested this week, so it’s unclear how strong her game is at this point. The way Giorgi is playing right now though, we should expect a tight contest, unlike their first meeting.

Giorgi vs Gauff Pick

Gauff cruised to a straight sets win on clay over Giorgi in the Round of 16 at the Emilia-Romagna Open in May. The American went on to win the tournament, and followed up that performance with a quarterfinal showing at Roland Garros. Clay is far from Giorgi’s best surface, as her preference is the hard court, which explains her strong showing this week.

Giorgi’s last WTA title came on hardcourt, as did her last runner-up finish. She’s advanced to at least the quarterfinals in three of her past four hardcourt events, and four of the recent upsets she’s pulled off over top-16 opponents have also come on hardcourt.

She’s playing arguably the best tennis of her career, and with a pair of victories over higher seeds than Gauff already this week, Giorgi is not to be taken lightly. Her outright +110 odds are tempting, but if we expect this to be hard fought battle, betting it to go the distance actually represents more value. +150 is a tasty number for a three-setter, something Gauff is accustom to. 15 of her past 37 matches have gone to a deciding set.

Pick: 3 Sets (+150)
