Sakkari Upsets Kenin

Sakkari became the first Greek woman to reach a Grand Slam singles quarterfinals on Monday when she upset fourth seed Sofia Kenin in about an hour, to win 6-1, 6-3.

On route to her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal, Sakkari went on to win 84 percent of points when she landed her first serve, and took advantage of her opponents nine double faults and 32 unforced errors.

She outplayed her opponent from start to finish to even out their head-to-head record at two wins a piece. And unfortunately for Kenin, the American just wasn’t able to gain any momentum, and nothing was falling her way. Sakkari was able to continuously hold a commanding lead.

After facing last year’s finalist, she’ll now take on last year’s champion Iga Swiatek. Her toughest task of the tournament as she’ll be looking to earn her spot in the final four.

Defending Champion

With her win on Monday, Swiatek recorded her 10th straight win here at Roland Garros, and earned a spot in the final eight. It was her first match during the night session, and despite having to change her routine, Swiatek didn’t miss a beat. She defeated her opponent Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and a half.

Not only is this Swiatek’s 10th straight win in Paris, but it’s her 10th straight win on the season, and she also extended her sets won in Paris to 22. She’s been tested this tournament, but she keeps coming out on top.

The 20-year old is still competing in doubles, so she’s not really giving herself a day off. As the tournament continues, this might change, or fatigue could get in her way.

The 2020 champion is defending her title like she should. She’s been playing lights out, and Sakkari will most likely test her, but it’s nothing she can’t handle.

Surprisingly this will be the first meeting between these two players. We don’t have much to go off heading into this match. Both Sakkari and Swiatek have had a fairly successful 2021 season so far, and boost an impressive record.
