  • Shelton enters as the heavy favorite in this opening-round clash
  • No prior head-to-head history exists between Shelton and Griekspoor
  • I project Shelton to cover a sizable game spread over the best-of-five

First-round action at the US Open continues on Monday night with a compelling clash between American favorite Ben Shelton and Dutch underdog Tallon Griekspoor at (circa 7:00 pm ET). Ranked No. 9 globally, Shelton enters this first-round matchup with massive expectations on home soil. He’s currently the fourth-favorite in the odds to win the US Open.

For bettors, the biggest question is whether Griekspoor’s baseline defense can neutralize the American’s elite first serve. I will analyze whether Shelton’s top-10 pedigree provides a distinct statistical edge to exploit in the prop and spread markets.

Ben Shelton vs Tallon Griekspoor Picks & Predictions

Shelton and Griekspoor have head-to-head professional results. Based on current Elo ratings, both players’ year-long trends, and recent results, I’m backing Shelton to win quickly and efficiently.

Game-Spread Pick: Shelton -5.5 (-104 at Polymarket)

Shelton owns a 1.139 Dominance Ratio versus 0.982 for Griekspoor, while his Breakpoints Prevail and Match Efficiency figures are 1.342 and 1.664, respectively, compared with 0.847 and 0.797 for the Dutchman. Those are meaningful indicators that Shelton has been more effective at turning pressure points into scoreboard separation.

The current Tennis Abstract Elo ratings and Tennis Ratio’s 52-week key-stat comparisons reinforce that edge: Shelton is rated 1,977.5 overall Elo and 1,948.5 on hard courts, compared with Griekspoor at 1,793.6 overall and 1,782.5 on hard courts. Shelton also wins 90.4% of service games and 71.0% of break points saved, well ahead of Griekspoor’s 83.4% and 60.8%.

The American’s 76.9% first-serve points-won rate and 57.9% second-serve points-won rate likewise exceed Griekspoor’s 73.5% and 53.7%.

Recent hard-court results point in the same direction. Shelton reached the Montreal final by beating Tallon Tien, Jiri Mensik, Zizou Bergs, Joao Fonseca and Tien Learner before falling to Brandon Nakashima, whereas Griekspoor went 2-2 across his Montreal and Washington hard-court matches.

Shelton’s 61.0% tiebreak win rate versus Griekspoor’s 45.5% is especially valuable in a matchup where several sets could be decided by a few points.

The American’s higher ace rate (0.72 per game to 0.66) and stronger serve protection should limit Griekspoor’s opportunities to apply pressure.

Griekspoor does create slightly more break points (0.42 per game to 0.38), but Shelton faces fewer break points to defend (0.33 to 0.42) and is much more likely to escape those moments. That combination gives Shelton the clearest path to the breaks needed to cover 5.5 games.

Exact-Score Pick: Shelton to Win 3-0 (+108 at Kalshi)

48%

Shelton’s statistical advantage also makes a straight-sets victory a viable plus-money wager. At +108, the implied probability is 48%, a price that understates the favorite’s clean-sweep potential in a best-of-five match.

Griekspoor’s recent hard-court form has been uneven, and his lower hard-court Elo, service-game win rate and tiebreak performance leave little margin for error against a top-10 opponent. Shelton’s 1.664 Match Efficiency rating compared with Griekspoor’s 0.797 suggests the American has been substantially better at converting overall performance into wins.

Shelton’s ability to hold serve efficiently puts constant scoreboard pressure on the underdog. I expect him to create separation in the return games and protect enough service holds to win without dropping a set.

Griekspoor vs Shelton Odds & Lines

Griekspoor+614+5.5 (+100)Un 38.5 (-117)

The table above converts the latest Kalshi prices into American odds. Lines remain subject to change before the first serve.

I strongly advise bettors to monitor the vig-free probabilities as the handle increases closer to match time. Market resistance will likely show if sharp money takes a position on the underdog’s spread.
