Super Bowl Coin Toss Odds, Results, Betting History & Trends – Heads or Tails for Every Year

Every single Super Bowl has started with a coin toss to determine who will get the ball to start the game and which half of the field belongs to each team. Betting on that coin toss is still a somewhat new thing, however. Since it has become available it has quickly turned into one of the more popular and interesting Super Bowl props.

As the only true 50-50 proposition you can find, sportsbooks also charge a lot less juice on the coin toss, with one sportsbook charging none. You could find either “heads” or “tails” available at +100 odds at bet365 for the 2025 Super Bowl. For comparison, a game between two evenly matched teams generally sees -110 odds offered on each side to win.

As a result, this prop draws the attention of all types of sports bettors. One bettor reportedly placed a $5,000 bet on the Super Bowl 55 coin toss, siding with heads for a $9,850 return.

I have collected all the coin toss results from past Super Bowls, and also looked into how often the team who wins the coin toss goes on to win the game.

Super Bowl 59 sees the Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 9 with kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm ET. Ron Torbert is the head referee for the game and will therefore have the honor of flipping the coin. The Kansas City Chiefs will get to call the coin toss in the 2025 Super Bowl, as it is the AFC’s year to be the visiting team.

As of Friday morning, BetMGM has reported 53% of the money wagered on the outcome of the coin toss is on Tails. However, Heads has 53% of the total bets placed. So, they have taken bigger bets on Tails than the other side. Caesars has reported to SBD’s Zach Reger that Tails is (once again) a liability for them.

Ron Torbert Coin Toss Results

In Torbert’s previous Super Bowl, Super Bowl 56, the coin toss came up heads. The visiting Rams called “Tails” in Super Bowl 56, losing the toss. The Bengals, who won that coin toss, did not go on to win the game.

Ron Torbert has flipped 17 coins this season, with one of those being a playoff game. He has been the head referee for two Eagles games this year, one was their “home game” in Brazil, where the Packers correctly called the toss, and the other was a home game against the Giants, where New York’s call was wrong, meaning Philadelphia won the toss. So, the Eagles are 1-1 in coin tosses as the home team when Ron Torbert flips the coin this season.

Looking at all 17 of his games, the away team has only accurately called the toss in seven of 17. He did officiate one playoff game, where the away team was wrong on the call again for the OT coin toss. The away team won his most recent toss, as the Commanders accurately called the flip in their Divisional Round matchup with the Lions.

Chiefs & Eagles Coin Toss Results

The Chiefs went 4-5 on coin tosses this season when they made the call. However, they have won each of the last two coin tosses they called, which came back in Weeks 17 and 18. Overall, Kansas City is 9-10 on coin tosses this season, which includes going 1-1 in the playoffs so far, but they did not call either of those. The Chiefs will be calling the coin toss in Super Bowl 59.

Through the first eight games of the Eagles’ season, the team who called the toss (the away team) won each time. Their opponents opened the season winning each of the first five coin tosses when they got to call it. That trend completely flipped, though, as their opponents went ice cold calling the toss, as the Eagles won six of their last seven coin tosses as the home team. So, for the season they are 6-6 on coin tosses when their opponent calls the toss, and are 12-8 overall.

Philadelphia is 2-1 on coin tosses in the playoffs, and they have been the home team for each of them, which is the same scenario they find themselves in for Super Bowl 59.

The table above includes the result of every Super Bowl coin toss, along with which team won the toss and whether or not they won the game as well.

The Chiefs correctly called “Tails” to win the Super Bowl 59 coin toss.

One of the most popular Super Bowl coin toss trends comes around whether the team who wins the toss wins the game as well. But here’s some more on coin toss trends below:

Super Bowl Coin Toss Trends

Here are a handful of trends we’ve unearthed from the Super Bowl coin toss results:

  • The coin toss has been Tails in eight of the last 12 Super Bowls
  • The team who won the coin toss has lost the Super Bowl in nine of the last 11 years, and is 26-33 all-time
  • The Cowboys hold the record for most Super Bowl coin toss wins with five

Now here’s a look at the heads/tails results.

Heads vs Tails Records in Super Bowls

Heads/Tails All-Time Record All-Time Win% Record in Last 10 Win% in Last 10
Heads 28-31 47.5% 4-6 40%
Tails 31-28 52.5% 6-4 60%

Even though the probability of each outcome (heads or tails) is split 50-50, the actual outcomes slightly favor tails right now thanks to the recent trend. After Super Bowl 48, we were tied 24-24. Tails has just rarely failed lately.

Tails currently holds the advantage with a 31-28 record over heads. That means tails has happened in 52.5% of Super Bowl coin tosses.
