Two middling teams in a middling Power 6 conference (no offense, Big East, but it wasn’t your best year) meet Wednesday at 3:00 pm ET as 9th-seeded Marquette faces 8th-seeded Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
The Golden Eagles edged the Hoyas, 64-60, when these schools met back on Jan. 2. This matchup should be awfully tight too, or at least it appears that way on paper.

---|---|---|---|
Marquette | -3 (-110) | Off | Over 144 (-110) |

How They’ve Fared Recently
Georgetown ended its regular season on a losing note, but the Hoyas still won four of their final six games — including victories over Seton Hall (53rd in KenPom) and Xavier (59th).
The Hoyas are neither good at preventing turnovers (315th in NCAA Division I in offensive turnover rate) nor forcing them (322nd in D-I in defensive turnover rate). They also gave up a season-high 98 points — in regulation — to Connecticut this past Saturday.

Save for a loss to Connecticut on Feb. 27, Marquette has won four of its past five — including wins vs. North Carolina (31st in KenPom) and Xavier. The Golden Eagles are comparably bad at turnover avoidance and generation, but they’re good at stopping an inside offensive attack (34th in two-point percentage allowed).
Both Georgetown and Marquette have a victory over #17 Creighton on their resumes, but Marquette has another top-tier win: a 67-65 defeat of then-#4 Wisconsin.

To give you an idea of how evenly matched Georgetown and Marquette are on paper (in addition to the narrow spread), consider this: when Marquette has the ball, they’re 126th in D-I in effective field goal percentage, and Georgetown is 126th in D-I in effective field goal percentage allowed. Eerie stuff.
ATS Analysis
Georgetown is 12-9 against the spread this season, while Marquette is 11-15 ATS overall.
The Hoyas are 5-3 ATS in recent games as an underdog and they’ve seen the under hit in three of their past four games. The Golden Eagles are 5-1 ATS in their past six games and they’ve seen the over hit in three of their past four games.

Head-to-Head Matchup
Marquette earned the straight up win against Georgetown earlier this season but the Hoyas snuck away with the ATS win (4.5-point underdogs, covered by 0.5 points).
Georgetown actually held a double-digit lead inside the final nine minutes, at which point Marquette went on a 17-2 run to take the lead. Basketball is often a game of runs, and this time Marquette went on a run at the right time.

The Hoyas went 2-of-11 down the stretch and had 17 turnovers in the game. Really rough stuff. With the way Marquette has played lately, they can give Georgetown enough grief to win again (by the spread this time).
Pick: Marquette -3 (-110)
