The old guard faces the new in the second men’s semifinal at Wimbledon on Friday. Current world #1 Jannik Sinner, who’s still a month shy of his 24th birthday, will face winningest men’s grand slam champion of all time, 38-year-old Novak Djokovic. Nole, a 24-time grand slam champ, has fallen to #6 in the world largely due to injury/inactivity. But he’s turned back the clock at the All England Club, cruising to the semifinals.
Sportsbooks give youth a clear edge in the Sinner vs Djokovic odds, setting the Italian as a sizable favorite to advance to his first-ever Wimbledon final.
Sinner vs Djokovic Odds
Sinner is currently a -240 favorite on the moneyline, with Djokovic coming back as a +175 underdog. Extracting the juice, the current odds give Sinner a 64% implied win probability and Djokovic the remaining 34%. The game spread sees Sinner laying 3.5 games with -125 odds to cover. Djokovic is -105 to stay within three games of the world #1. The total is sitting at 40.5 games with the over slightly favored at -120. Odds as of July 11 at Caesars. Sinner and Djokovic started the tournament as the second and third-favorites, respectively, and that’s where they remain heading into the semis. Sinner is +209, on average, in advance of the semis. Djokovic is +411 in the updated Wimbledon title odds. Both trail odds-on favorite and defending-champion Carlos Alcaraz (-137), who is perceived to have an easier semifinal against American Taylor Fritz. (The Fritz vs Alcaraz odds favor the Spaniard at -600.)
Djokovic vs Sinner Head-to-Head History
The head-to-head rivalry between Djokovic and Sinner has been a tale of two halves. Djokovic won four of the first five times they met, but Sinner has now won five in a row.
Djokovic can, however, say that he’s won both matches he and Sinner have played on grass. Djokovic fought back from two sets down to win an all-time classic in the 2022 quarterfinals. The next year, he breezed past Sinner in straight sets in the semifinals, which remains Sinner’s best showing at the All England Club.
Sinner does already have two grand-slam victories over Djokovic. He took a straight-sets win at this year’s French Open roughly six weeks ago, and he beat Djokovic in four sets at the 2024 Australian Open.
Sinner vs Djokovic Picks & Prediction
- Under 40.5 games (-110)
- Sinner -3.5 games (-125)
Jannik Sinner has shown his fallibility of late. He was on the verge of extinction in the round of 16, trailing #19 Grigor Dimitrov by two sets before the latter had to retire with a serious pectoral injury. Sinner also lost his second grass-court match of the season to #31 Alexander Bublik (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) in Halle as a -900 betting favorite.
Those subpar performances are interspersed among complete domination, though. The two sets he lost to Dimitrov are the only sets he’s dropped at the All England Club this year, and only one other opponent has managed to win more than four games in a single set. (Ben Shelton took Sinner to a tiebreak in the first set of the quarterfinals.) Sinner’s run to the round of 16 was paved with overmatched players, but Shelton was an in-form, top-10 opponent whom Sinner completely dominated. The Italian won all 16 of his service games while facing just two break points, both of which game in the same game.
Sinner won over 80% of all of his service points while feasting on Shelton’s second serve (winning 59% of points on the American’s second serve).
Djokovic is in the semis without having to face a top-10 opponent. Alex de Minaur, the world #11, is Djokovic’s highest-ranked opponent to date, and he gave the Serbian all he could handle in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 round-of-16 match. De Minaur won over 40% of his return points against Djokovic, which is a staggering number. If the Australian had served better than 55% on the day, he might have walked away victorious.
If Sinner’s uncharacteristically poor outing against Dimitrov is giving you pause on betting the Italian, don’t let it. Sinner injured his elbow in the first game of the match and said afterward that it was significantly impacting both his serve and forehand. The Shelton match was proof positive that the injury has dissipated. I expect the young Italian to continue his dominant run against the GOAT.
I’m betting both the under and Sinner -3.5 games.
