Public Rooting for a Terence Crawford Upset

The betting public backing Crawford is no surprise. The plus-money payout is much more appetizing than laying juice on Canelo, and the American enters the ring with a perfect 41-0 record.

What’s fascinating is the discrepancy between tickets and handle given the large bets that have been placed on Crawford. One bettor at BetMGM placed a $2 million wager on the American to win on Friday night. Caesars Palace reported a $715,000 wager on Crawford to win, while other sportsbooks have reportedly taken six-figure bets on Bud as well.

Despite those big wagers on the underdog, the betting splits indicate that the vast majority of the Crawford bets are on the smaller side. That’s a strong indication of public action, as casual bettors usually don’t wager nearly as much as professionals.

In the rare case they do, like the six and seven-figure bets mentioned, it’s usually money coming from a Whale and not a pro. There’s a reason sportsbooks take massive bets from people like Drake, and limit how much money they’ll let a professional get down.

Nevertheless, the heavy amount of underdog tickets has led to a shift in the Canelo vs Crawford odds. Alvarez opened as a -200 favorite months ago across the best boxing betting sites, with Crawford coming back as a +175 underdog.

Crawford is currently listed as a +140 ‘dog, a price that gives him a 41.6% implied probability of pulling off the upset. In my opinion that’s ludicrous, as he’s jumping multiple weight classes to fight one of the legends of the sport.

Should You Bet on Terence Crawford as an Underdog?

Crawford has never fought above the 154-pound weight class, and now he’s jumping to 168 pounds. His lone fight at junior middleweight was uninspiring, and the only way I see him beating Canelo is by knocking him out.

That’s easier said than done. In 67 career fights, Alvarez has never been knocked down let alone knocked out. He’s expected to enter the ring 10 pounds heavier than the super middleweight limit after hydration, and Bud just doesn’t have the power to hurt Alvarez.

Canelo is used to battling bigger, stronger opponents, having also previously jumped up in divisions himself. He’s also accustom to fighting the sport’s best, as the record of his last four opponents was a staggering 123-1-1 before they climbed into the ring against him.

I expect Canelo to bully Crawford once he figures out his speed and strategy. You might see Crawford win a few early rounds, but as the fight progresses, Canelo will pick him apart. It’s always tempting to back the ‘dog in these high-profile fights, but the value is on Canelo at these updated odds.
