It’s down to a best-of-3 series in Round 1 between the Utah Mammoth and the Golden Knights, after a wild Vegas OT win in Game 4 to bring the series to 2-2.
The books think the Pacific Division champs have things in order after an unsettling start, as they’re home favorites in the NHL odds.
Puck drop is set for 10pm ET from T-Mobile Arena in Vegas, with TNT/truTV/HBO Max providing the national broadcast coverage.
Read below as I share my prediction, injury news and the updated odds for Game 5.
Mammoth vs Golden Knights Prediction
- Pick: Mammoth ML (+140 at bet365)
It is certainly Utah’s first rodeo in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and with a couple of bounces here or there, they might actually be up 3-1 going Vegas to close things out, or waiting for their Round 2 opponent.
For the second time in this series, Utah couldn’t hold a third period lead and ended up losing. While Game 1 was a getting-your-feet-wet eye opener, Game 4 should sting a lot more.
The Mammoth rallied from 3-0 down to eventually go ahead 4-3 in the third period, but Brett Howden tied it midway through the frame, setting up Shea Theodore’s heroics and a 5-4 OT win for the Golden Knights.
It’s been an extremely tight series so far, with each team scoring exactly 13 goals, Utah ahead by one hit on the total hit count (168-167) and Utah goalie Karel Vejmelka and Vegas netminder Carter Hart at a virtual standoff in save percentage: .899 to .886.
The good news for Vegas is that all their goals in Game 4 were by guys scoring their first goal of the series, including regular-season goal-scoring leader Pavel Dorofeyev and Theodore, the team’s leading scorer on the blueline.
They will need all systems go Wednesday, as Utah is extremely comfortable in the confines of T-Mobile Arena. They earned the split to start the series, and have won three of their last four in that building, outscoring the Golden Knights 13-4.
We know how important Game 5 is when a series is tied 2-2: in NHL playoff history, the team that goes on to win that game clinches the series nearly 80% of the time.
After a few fails, look for Utah to be able to land the plane in the biggest game in their franchise history.
Mammoth vs Golden Knights Injury News
Utah center Barrett Hayton (upper body) remains week-to-week despite participating in Tuesday’s morning skate, in a report out of the Utah Desseret News. Hayton had 10 goals and 15 assists in the regular season.
Perhaps the most interesting news, however, was Mammoth head coach Andre Tourigny benching forward JJ Peterka in for the entirety of the Game 4 overtime, calling it a coaching decision vs an injury.
Peterka was fifth in scoring for Utah this season, with 25 goals and 47 points, but he’s scoreless in the series, registering just five shots and is a minus-3 on the ice.
For Vegas, center William Karlsson (lower body) remains out and there is no timetable for his return. He’s been out since Nov. 8, though the team says he is progressing with his rehab.
