Why F1 Requires a Different Betting Approach
Betting on F1 is different than betting on most team sports, mostly because of the potential variables outside of the control of a driver and his team.
Strategy and pit timing are dependent on the team, but car performance and weather play an out-sized role in the outcome.
F1 is also a sport that that sees favorites dominate race wins, diminishing the value of that market for bettors. That forces you to look even deeper into props and live betting to gain an edge.
F1 Betting Markets Explained
Before I dive into the strategy of betting on F1, here’s a look at the markets you will find at the best F1 betting apps.
Race Winner
This is the most straightforward and simple F1 bet, but it can be difficult to find value in, thanks to the dominance of favorites.
Using proper F1 track betting strategy by finding wet races or street circuits with high crash probability is the only time to really target this market.
Podium Finish
An expansion of the race winner bet, as you’re betting on someone finishing top three in a race. The odds won’t be as bettor friendly, but it’s also a chance to successfully bet on someone outside the favorite.
This is a great market for F1 betting beginners.
Pole Position
Bet on who will have the pole position, or the top starting position, which is decided by the fastest driver in the final round of qualifying.
Pole position is also a major deciding factor in who will eventually win the race, particularly on low-overtaking tracks, as passing is difficult.

Head-to-Head Driver Matchups
Wager on one driver to beat another, either in a Grand Prix or season-long standings. For example, Lando Norris vs. George Russell, or Kimi Antonelli vs. Charles Leclerc.
These will be presented like moneyline odds, and are the most consistently bet-able props in F1.
Fastest Lap
Bet on who will have the fastest lap during the race. This prop allows you to find value outside the race winner or podium finishers, because the car with the fastest lap doesn’t always win the race.
These markets are available before the race, of course, but also live during a race, as well.
Safety Car
This is a simple yes or no market with odds on either side, based on whether the physical safety car will need to come out in the race.
Tighter street circuits, or races where weather is a factor, elevate this possibility.
Points Finish / Top 6 / Top 10
These bets go beyond the podium, as you can bet on them finishing within the Top 10. This allows you to go even further outside of the favorites, but also find a consistent driver or team that simply isn’t among the elite.

F1 Prop Betting Strategy
Now it’s time to dive into the best strategies to deploy when betting on F1 props.
Head-to-Head Driver Props
Instead of betting on the whole race, you can bet on individual matchups within it, adding a fun and potentially profitable element to F1 betting and viewing.
With moneyline odds on both sides of these bets, you can obviously find some that are more profitable than others. But by looking into which circuit they’re racing on, and knowing who is better on a high-downforce track, or which drivers underperform on power circuits, you can find great value in head-to-head driver props.
Fastest Lap Props
Betting on who will record the fastest lap in a grand prix is a great way to get favorable odds on some of the better teams and drivers in the field, as it’s a tad more volatile than race winner.
Look for late pit stops as drivers look to get softer tires and finish strong in the final laps, where the fastest lap is often recorded. Drivers no longer get a point for recording the fastest lap, but they are, obviously, always looking to close strong and get into the points.
Qualifying and Session Props
Betting on qualifying is much different than race betting, as it winnows down from the original grid of 22 to a final shootout of 10 cars.
You can bet on who will claim the pole position with the fastest time in Q3, but also on who will make it there. There are also team or constructor props for those markets.
But because the final field is smaller than a race field, qualifying strategy is different than what you’ll see on Sundays.
Safety Car Props
The most common safety car prop you’ll find at F1 betting sites is a yes/no proposition on if it will be deployed.
There are circuits where the safety car is more likely to come out, such as Monaco, Baku, Singapore, Las Vegas and Miami. Historical race data from those tracks will show you just how likely that is, and it’s a good idea to look into that before placing any safety car prop bets.
Some sportsbooks will also offer markets on the deployment of a virtual safety car, which is for lesser incidents, but requires cars to slow by 30-40 percent.
Constructor / Team Props
Constructor markets will look a lot like individual driver markets, but you’re betting on the result of either driver on a team, not just one.
So, a bet on Mercedes will cover finishes or other markets for both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. There are also “both car” bets, so you could place a single wager on Ferrari and win if Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both finish within the points.

As F1 has become one of the more popular motorsports for viewers in the US, placing live bets on F1 has also increased. Thanks to the ebbs and flows of the sport, there are plenty of opportunities for savvy bettors to pounce on.
The Safety Car Window
When the safety car comes out, it’s the single biggest window for live betting, as it changes the dynamic of a race.
A leader’s advantage disappears, and drivers who are able to make a pit stop can do so and still gain position. Make sure to watch who takes this opportunity to pit, what type of tires they are putting on their car, and how many laps remain in the race.
You’re also going to see a big change in winner and podium finish odds, giving you a chance to target a driver that otherwise would have been on the outside looking in.
Pit Stop Timing and the Undercut
When a driver makes a pit stop can play a massive role in how they finish, and their changing live odds.
If a driver undercuts the field, taking an early pit stop to get fresh tires, they can post faster laps earlier and come out ahead late in a race when others make their own pits.
But an overcut can also be a solid strategy, if they work through more worn tires and save their pit stop for later. This gives them fresh tires late in the race, and more clear traffic to exit the pit area.
Watching how those strategies impact F1 betting odds can give you a window to place a live bet.
Tire Degradation as a Live Betting Signal
The types of tires on a car, and how long they’ve been on the car, will impact lap times and positioning.
If a team switches to a softer tire, they’re looking for more speed in a smaller window, as they provide better grip for faster cornering, but also degrade more quickly.
Hard tires last longer, allowing a driver to stay on the course without having to make as many pit stops, but don’t give the same control. Medium grade tires fall somewhere in the middle.

Weather and Track Condition Changes
In a high-speed outdoor sport, one of the biggest factors can be completely out of control of those racing: the weather.

You’re also going to see odds on a safety car appearance get much shorter if weather hits. Knowing what’s coming by studying real-time weather data, can give you an edge live betting F1.
When to bet Pre-Race vs. Live
Certain F1 bets are better to make live, as the flow of a race is the most important factor.
Foremost among those is a fastest lap bet, as you can use pit stop and tire strategy to see who can make a run at it late. You can also find value in podium finish bets when betting live during a safety car window.
