The Hart goes to the player judged most valuable to his team, and the futures market spends all season arguing about who that is. Scoring races tighten, a goalie occasionally crashes the conversation, and a red-hot February can flip the entire board. The favorite on opening night is rarely the name being read out in June.
This page is the record. Every NHL season going back to 2019-20 is below, with the chart showing how the market moved, a quick recap of how each MVP got there, dated movement notes, and the closing odds.

2025 Hart Trophy Odds
Goalies don’t win the Hart. This time, one did. Connor Hellebuyck carried the Winnipeg Jets with a 2.00 goals-against average and eight shutouts, becoming the first netminder to take MVP since Carey Price in 2015.
The race came down to Hellebuyck and Leon Draisaitl, with Nikita Kucherov the third finalist. Hellebuyck pulled in 81 of 191 first-place ballots to settle a tight final vote.
Below is how a goaltender climbed from a preseason afterthought to the front of the MVP market.
2025 Closing Hart Trophy Odds
| Player | Odds |
|---|---|
| Connor Hellebuyck (Jets) | -120 |
| Leon Draisaitl (Oilers) | +110 |
| Nikita Kucherov (Lightning) | +900 |

How the 2025 Hart race got there:
- [June 12] Connor Hellebuyck won the 2025 Hart in a tight final vote over Leon Draisaitl, drawing 81 of 191 first-place ballots. He is the first goaltender to win MVP since Carey Price in 2015.
- [March 3] Leon Draisaitl emerged as the odds-on favorite at -130 to win the 2025 Hart, while Connor Hellebuyck (+120) and Nathan MacKinnon (+750) rounded out the top three.
- [February 9] Draisaitl’s odds tightened from +125 to -140 as the Oilers stayed atop the Pacific Division, while Hellebuyck surged from +290 to +120 on the back of his standout goaltending.
- [January 15] Connor McDavid’s odds lengthened to +3000 following injuries and a suspension, opening the door for Draisaitl to take over as favorite while Hellebuyck made a rare goaltender push into the top contenders.
- [October 5] Nathan MacKinnon opened as the heavy +100 favorite to repeat as Hart winner at DraftKings, with Connor McDavid (+150) and Leon Draisaitl (+1000) rounding out the top three.
2024 Hart Trophy Odds
Nathan MacKinnon finally got his. After years near the top of the conversation, the Avalanche center broke through with a career-best 140 points (51 goals, 89 assists) to claim his first MVP.
Connor McDavid opened the season as the favorite, but MacKinnon ran him down and turned an early longshot price into a clear front-runner by spring. He held off McDavid and Nikita Kucherov in the final vote.
Here’s how the 2024 Hart market shifted from October to the finish.
2024 Closing Hart Trophy Odds
| Player | Odds |

| Nathan MacKinnon (Avalanche) | -300 |

- [January] MacKinnon pulled ahead of McDavid in the odds as the Avalanche stayed near the top of the Western Conference and his point total climbed.
- [June 27, 2023] Connor McDavid opened as the heavy +100 favorite to win the 2024 Hart at DraftKings, with Nathan MacKinnon (+900) and Leon Draisaitl (+1000) rounding out the top three.
2023 Hart Trophy Odds
This one was over by Christmas. Connor McDavid turned the 2023 Hart race into a formality, opening at +283 and steadily shortening until the only suspense was the size of the number next to his name.
By April his MVP odds sat at -9000, an implied 99% chance to win. McDavid grabbed his third Hart while running away with the NHL scoring race.
It was a one-sided market from opening night on, but here’s how it got there.

|---|---|
| Connor McDavid (Oilers) | -9000 |
| David Pastrnak (Bruins) | +4800 |

How it got there:
- [April 1] McDavid’s Hart odds improved to -9000, meaning it would take a miracle for another player to win. His updated implied win probability was 99%.
- [March 1] McDavid virtually locked up the Hart, with his MVP odds priced at -3000. Boston goalie Linus Ullmark was the new second favorite at +2500.
- [February 1] McDavid was running away with the race, his MVP odds shortening to -700. The price implied an 87.5% chance to win.
- [January 2] McDavid’s Hart odds shortened to -260 as the Oilers phenom pulled away from the pack with a 20-point lead in the NHL scoring race.
- [December 5] Dallas forward Jason Robertson was a huge early-season mover, netting 23 goals in his first 25 games to shorten his MVP odds to +425.
- [November 7] McDavid’s odds had already shortened to +140 after a few weeks. Auston Matthews faded to +700 following a slow start.
- [July 18] Connor McDavid opened as the +283 favorite to win his third MVP after finishing second in 2022 Hart voting. Defending winner Auston Matthews was listed at +400.
2022 Hart Trophy Odds
A goalie nearly stole it, and a 50-goal scorer had to hold him off. Auston Matthews captured his first Hart Trophy, beating preseason favorite Connor McDavid while fending off a late charge from Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin.
Shesterkin’s was the wildest ride on the board, going from as long as +6600 to an average of +450 by the time finalists were named. Matthews played his way back into the race in February and pulled away down the stretch.

Key swings in the 2022 Hart odds:
- [May 13] Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, and Igor Shesterkin were named finalists. Of the three, Shesterkin’s odds made for the wildest ride, going from as long as +6600 to an average of +450.
- [March 24] Though Matthews appeared to be pulling away as the favorite, Shesterkin played himself into the MVP conversation, getting odds as short as +300.
- [February 25] Matthews played himself right back into the race, going from as high as +2000 in some books back in December to a season-low of +380.
- [February 2] A much tighter race as the NHL broke for the All-Star Game. McDavid led as the favorite, but Ovechkin and Huberdeau were right on his tail. Huberdeau had been +5000 at the end of November.
- [January 18] With the Oilers and McDavid struggling, Jonathan Huberdeau and Matthews started to make noise. McDavid was still favored, but the pack was creeping up.
- [December 13] Alex Ovechkin remained a sneaky bet for MVP. Not a huge move, but his Hart odds improved from +800 to +775.
- [November 29] MacKinnon’s odds worsened significantly from +875 to +2500. McDavid’s teammate Leon Draisaitl crept up on him as the sole favorite, going from +750 to +288.
- [November 10] Ovechkin led the league in goals and saw his Hart odds shorten from +4250 to +1500. MacKinnon’s odds lengthened after news he would miss three weeks with a lower-body injury.
- [October 20] McDavid’s hot start pushed his odds to +150. With Kucherov moved to LTIR, his odds shot up to +3000.
- [October 4] With less than a week to the season, McDavid’s odds improved from +400 to +225. MacKinnon’s lengthened from +500 to +625.
- [July 13] Connor McDavid opened as the favorite to win MVP for a third time after the 2021 Hart. Nikita Kucherov was listed at +800, with teammate Leon Draisaitl at +1200.
2021 Hart Trophy Odds
Back on top. Connor McDavid reclaimed the Hart in a pandemic-shortened, January-to-May season, turning a +700 opening number into a -1500 lock by April.

2020 Hart Trophy Odds
Leon Draisaitl put up a number nobody else could touch. The Oilers center racked up 110 points — the only player to clear 100 in 2019-20 — and edged teammate Connor McDavid for the MVP in what became a two-man race with Nathan MacKinnon down the stretch.
Draisaitl became the first German-born player to win the Hart Trophy. McDavid finished second in league scoring with 97 points.
