The 2026 World Cup group stage kicks off for the Netherlands and Japan this afternoon at 4:00 PM EST at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Both nations enter this crucial opening fixture with a blank slate in Group F of the printable World Cup bracket, which also features Sweden and Tunisia. I see massive stakes here for securing an early inside track to the knockout rounds.

While betting markets position the Dutch as favorites in the World Cup game odds, Japan enters as a highly dangerous underdog fully capable of blowing up early tournament brackets. Elite stars like Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk and forward Cody Gakpo provide unquestionable global pedigree. However, they face a Japanese squad anchored by dynamic playmaker Takefusa Kubo.

The matchup grows even more intriguing with Netherlands starting goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen listed as doubtful, exposing a critical vulnerability. Will the traditional European powerhouse assert their dominance, or is an outright upset brewing? Keep reading for my favorite Netherlands vs Japan predictions, best bets and injury news, below.

My favorite bets for this matchup are the Japan moneyline and under 2.5 goals. The Japanese check all the boxes I look for when I think about how to pick World Cup underdogs, and the price is extremely fair at +285.

Manager Hajime Moriyasu brings a roster heavily tilted toward midfield control, selecting nine midfielders and nine defenders while carrying only five dedicated forwards. This personnel distribution points directly to a strategy aimed at suffocating the center of the pitch. I believe this spells trouble for Ronald Koeman’s Dutch squad, who rely heavily on an aging veteran defensive spine.

Japan arrives in Arlington carrying staggering momentum. They are unbeaten in seven matches, a run featuring a 3-2 victory over Brazil and a 1-0 win against England. By contrast, Netherlands preparation looks uneven, dropping a 1-0 friendly to Algeria.

Opening matches of the World Cup routinely produce cagey, low-scoring affairs. Furthermore, Japan brings a streak of five consecutive clean sheets into the tournament. Because the Dutch will look to exploit vertical mismatches, the Japanese defensive unit will likely sit deep to prevent overlapping crosses. This creates a tactical gridlock that heavily favors Under 2.5 goals.

The only previous World Cup meeting between these two nations was a grinding 1-0 Dutch victory in Durban back in 2010. Japan were a different prospect then, playing stubbornly but ultimately looking outmatched. Sixteen years later, they walk onto the pitch having beaten South American and European royalty within the last twelve months.

The structural composition tells the story. The Netherlands will trot out a veteran core headlined by Van Dijk (195 cm) and Ake, leaning on an overwhelming height advantage. Conversely, Japan counters with technical midfielders who excel at ground-level transition play.

Japan’s flawless unbeaten streak over their last seven matches highlights their defensive elite status. Securing five consecutive clean sheets proves they can shut down high-powered offenses. The Dutch enter this contest relying too heavily on past pedigree, which doesn’t justify their relatively short World Cup winner odds.

There are numerous types of World Cup prop bets out there, but my favorite is Japan’s Takefusa Kubo to score. When Japan breaches the Dutch defense, the attack will flow through the right side of their formation. Kubo operates with a low center of gravity perfectly suited to drag 31-year-old Nathan Ake out of the left channel. With Verbruggen doubtful in goal, I love Kubo to score anytime at a generous +425 payout.

Netherlands vs Japan Injury News

The most significant injury development revolves around the Dutch net. Verbruggen was added to the injury report on Friday and is doubtful to feature against Japan. His potential absence introduces a critical variable into Koeman’s strategy. Deploying a backup goalkeeper could destabilize the communication of a backline that will face relentless transition attacks.
