It’s pretty high stakes for the first ever matchup between Karen Khachanov and Learner Tien: a berth ino the US Open men’s quarterfinals.
The rising American Tien enters as the sturdy favorite, boasting a world No. 15 ranking and a ridiculous run of recent form. Meanwhile, the No. 50-ranked Khachanov steps into the underdog role, looking to orchestrate a hefty upset on the hard courts.
The defining question for my betting approach is how these competitors will handle the stylistic clash. Can Khachanov’s heavy baseline artillery dictate play, or will Tien’s top-tier returning metrics neutralize the Russian’s serve?
Khachanov vs Tien underway at 4pm ET from Louis Armstrong Stadium at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, with ESPN carrying the broadcast.
Khachanov vs Tien Predictions and Best Bets
- Pick: Tien Moneyline (-163 at Kalshi)
Tennis Abstract’s Aug. 31 Elo ratings put Tien at 1,924.8 overall and 1,891.0 on hard courts, compared with Khachanov at 1,790.8 and 1,741.6, respectively. That hard-court gap supports Tien’s 62¢ Kalshi price, although it does not leave much obvious value at -163.
The recent US Open results show both men arriving in form: Tien is 3-0 after beating Nuno Borges and Gael Monfils in straight sets before outlasting Jakub Mensik in five, while Khachanov is also 3-0 with straight-set wins over Brandon Bonzi and Roman Andres Burruchaga plus a four-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Tennis Ratio’s 52-week comparison gives Tien the edge in dominance ratio (1.206 to 1.102), break points created per game (0.62 to 0.51), and tiebreaks won (71.9% to 32.0%). Those numbers point to a player more likely to turn pressure points and close out tight sets, which is important against Khachanov’s big serve.
- Pick: Over 38.5 Games (-108 at Polymarket)
The over is the preferred total-side lean, and buying it at Polymarket means getting it a game lower than at Kalshi (38.5 vs 39.5), though the juice is a little steeper (-108 vs +104).
Tien already needed five sets to get past Mensik, and Khachanov’s power profile can produce several close sets even if Tien ultimately advances. However, this remains a more volatile wager than the Tien moneyline because a one-sided straight-set result would stay comfortably below the number.
