- A viral clip on social media seems to show Draymond Green reminding Warriors of the spread in the waning moments of the game
- Sports betting users online seem to believe Green says “5.5 points” to his team, which was the spread
- Was Green reminding his team of the spread, or criticizing the refs for being ejected?
Certain sports betting circles are abuzz with theories as to what Draymond Green said before time expired during game three of the NBA’s western conference semifinal matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Green fouled out midway through the fourth quarter of the contest. However, with just 15 seconds left in the game, he was seen to mouth the words “Yeah it’s crazy. five-and-a-half points…the spread” to his team from the bench.
Questions remain regarding what Green actually said, what it was in reference to, and why he said the statement before time ran out in the game.
What Did Green Say?
The Warriors were a +5.5 underdog in the game. Green fouled out less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after two quick fouls with the Timberwolves up by two points.
With about 15 seconds left in the game and the Warriors trailing by eight, Green looks as if he’s saying saying “five-and-a-half points…the spread” to his teammates, who had the ball for the final possession.
The Warriors would hit a meaningless three with little time remaining to cover the spread. Jimmy Butler attempted a three point shot, which missed, but an offensive rebound went to Jonathan Kuminga, who quickly retreated to the three point line and hit the shot to cover for the Warriors as time expired
Several customers were convinced Green was reminding his teammates of the spread, to ensure they attempted to cover.
But is that what he was implying? It’s doubtful he was egging his teammates on to cover the spread, but was more likely criticizing the NBA referees for their calls and being ejected earlier in the game.
Likely Criticizing Refs
Despite what many sports betting customers believe, it’s far more likely Green was criticizing the refs for the game, as some people believe Green actually said “Yeah it’s crazy. Five and a half. I know they know it. The spread.”
It’s more likely Green was saying the referees were bending calls to the Timberwolves, to ensure the favorite covered the spread. The vast majority of handle was on the Timberwolves to cover at -5.5, though several sportsbooks had the spread at -4.5 when the line closed.
Green has had a difficult series so far, being ejected in game three and receiving a technical foul in game two. He’s been critical of the referees as well during the series, claiming they had “an agenda” after game two.
DraftKings currently has the spread as Warriors +5.5 for tonight’s game four. Currently, 54% of the total bets are on the Timberwolves to cover.
