Charlo Boxing Analysis

Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) enters Saturday’s bout looking to shake off the rust from an extended period of inactivity. The 35-year-old Texan has competed just twice since 2021, with well-documented personal issues and legal troubles derailing what was once a meteoric rise through the divisions.

The former IBF super welterweight and WBC middleweight champion last fought in November 2023, securing a unanimous decision over Jose Benavidez Jr. in a non-title affair. In that outing, Charlo landed 243 of 613 punches (40%) while limiting Benavidez to just 86 of 446 (19%), showing he still possesses the skills that made him a two-division titlist.

YouTube video

Boxing fans know Charlo for his elite jab, great fundamentals, and devastating knockout power, which is 67%. He has beaten some quality opponents, such as Austin Trout, Dennis Hogan, and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. But it’s been more than five years since he knocked someone out, which was Hogan in 2019. Now, there are questions about how motivated he is and what his mental state is like.

To secure victory on Saturday, Charlo will need to establish his jab early, use his experience edge, and avoid any ring rust that could give LaManna false hope. The move up to 168 pounds means he won’t enjoy his usual physical advantages, making technique and timing even more crucial.

LaManna Boxing Analysis

Thomas LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) rides into Vegas on a nine-fight winning streak, looking to score the biggest upset of his career. The 33-year-old from Millville, New Jersey has quietly rebuilt his career since being blown out in one round by Erislandy Lara back in 2021.

Currently ranked 11th by the WBA at super middleweight, “Cornflake” has stayed busy with seven fights since Charlo’s last meaningful bout. While the level of opposition during his win streak hasn’t been stellar, the activity and momentum could prove valuable against an inactive champion.

LaManna’s resume includes losses to quality fighters like Brian Mendoza (decision) and the aforementioned Lara, but he’s proven durable in most outings. Six of his last nine wins have come by stoppage, including knockouts in four of his previous seven bouts.

For LaManna to shock the boxing world, he’ll need to use his activity advantage and test Charlo’s chin early. If he can establish rhythm in the first few rounds and make it uncomfortable for the former champion, the door could open for a monumental upset. However, his defensive liabilities and tendency to get hit clean against top competition remain major concerns.

Charlo vs LaManna Prediction

While LaManna’s activity and hunger make this more intriguing than the odds suggest, Charlo’s class should ultimately shine through. The former champion may start cautiously as he finds his range, but once he settles into his rhythm, expect the jab to take control.

LaManna will have his moments early, using his recent ring time to press forward and test Charlo’s resolve. But as the rounds progress, Charlo’s superior technique and experience at the championship level should become increasingly apparent. Look for “Hit Man” to land the cleaner, more damaging shots while making LaManna miss with his pressure.

The big question is whether Charlo can recapture his knockout touch. Given his recent pattern of going the distance and the mental hurdles he’s faced, a stoppage seems unlikely. Instead, expect Charlo to box smartly, pile up points, and cruise to a wide decision victory that sets up a potential fall showdown with Caleb Plant.

Charlo vs LaManna Picks:

  • Charlo by Decision (-130)
  • Fight to go Over 7.5 Rounds (8/13)
