  • Virginia Tech and SMU meet Friday night in Dallas with matching 6-2 records
  • The Virginia Tech vs SMU odds favor the Mustangs at home

The Virginia Tech Hokies hit the road to take on the SMU Mustangs with both programs sitting at 6-2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on Friday, November 6, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

Virginia Tech comes off a bye after a gritty 20-16 win over Clemson on October 24. SMU returns home looking to bounce back from a narrow 30-27 loss to Syracuse.

The Virginia Tech vs SMU prediction comes down to two productive passing attacks and how often they finish drives with touchdowns. Here is my forecast, followed by the latest odds and best bet.

Virginia Tech vs SMU Prediction

  • Prediction: SMU wins outright, and the game goes Over 55.5 total points

SMU holds a slight edge in overall offensive efficiency, making the Mustangs my projected winner. SMU is producing 35.3 points and 464.1 total yards per game, compared to Virginia Tech’s 35.0 points and 424.1 yards per contest.

Third-down efficiency favors SMU, which has a 45.5% third-down conversion rate (45-for-99). Virginia Tech, while solid, sits lower at 40.0% (46-for-115). With home-field advantage and better efficiency on possession downs, SMU is the stronger side.

Meantime, the total points toward a shootout. SMU has scored on 86.8% of its red-zone trips (33-for-38), with 27 touchdowns. Virginia Tech scores on 85.3% of its trips (29-for-34), though only 20 of those ended in touchdowns. These two units combine to average just over 70 points per game.

The lone defensive factor that could disrupt the offensive rhythm lies in the pass rush. Virginia Tech has racked up 27 sacks. If the Hokies can reliably pressure the quarterback, they have a chance to stall SMU on third down.

Virginia Tech vs SMU Team Stats Comparison

The Virginia Tech vs SMU stats show a larger gap in passing production and red-zone touchdowns than in scoring average.

Red-Zone Scoring %85.3%86.8%
Red-Zone TD %58.8%71.1%
Turnover Margin-4-5

SMU’s edge comes primarily through the air, where it averages 318 passing yards per game to Virginia Tech’s 284.4. The bigger gap is in finishing drives. Both teams score in the red zone at nearly identical rates, but SMU turns those trips into touchdowns far more often.

Quarterbacks and Skill Players to Watch

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings has completed 73.7% of his passes for 2,414 yards (301.8 per game) with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions.

On the other side, Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer is tasked with keeping pace. He has thrown for 2,140 yards (267.5 per game), 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions on a 71.4% completion rate.

Grunkemeyer has a reliable chain-mover in receiver Que’Sean Brown, who has 51 catches for 685 yards and three scores. In the backfield, Jeffrey Overton Jr. balances the attack with 639 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 113 carries, plus 23 catches for 214 yards and two scores.

Virginia Tech to Win34¢
SMU to Win by Over 6.5 Points49¢
Over 55.5 Total Points52¢

Kalshi Yes buy prices as of November 5 at about 6:48 p.m. ET.

SMU is the clear favorite on Kalshi at 67¢, which returns a 33¢ profit per contract if the Mustangs win outright. The spread contract sits at 49¢, pricing an SMU win by a touchdown or more close to even. The key takeaway is the Over at 52¢, the most attractive entry on this board.

For sportsbook alternatives, compare the top College Football betting apps before choosing a book.

I still project SMU to win, but my entry point on the moneyline was anything under 60¢. At 67¢, the current price sits above that number, so I am passing on the Mustangs outright at this level.

Friday CFB Picks for Virginia Tech vs SMU

Friday CFB Pick: Virginia Tech vs SMU Over 55.5

  • Pick: Virginia Tech vs SMU Over 55.5

My best bet is the total. Any Over price at 55¢ or lower presented value, and Kalshi’s 52¢ quote clears that bar.

Both offenses average at least 35 points per game, and both score on more than 85% of their red-zone trips. Neither team carries a positive turnover margin into this matchup, adding volatility to a game already built on offense.

The defenses are respectable, with Virginia Tech allowing 20.5 points per game and SMU allowing 22.3. Virginia Tech’s pass rush is the main threat to stall drives, but these offenses combine for over 70 points per game against a total set at 55.5.

At 52¢, buying Yes returns a 48¢ profit per contract if the game clears the number.
