The 2020 League of Legends World Championship is down to the final two: Suning & DAMWON Gaming. The grand final takes place on October 31st as the two remaining teams will compete to hoist their first Summoner’s Cup. The LoL World Championship Odds have had Suning as an underdog all tournament long, and against DAMWON they are once again not the betting favorites.

China’s Unexpected Finalist

Going into Worlds 2020, Suning was the third seed out of China and all-tournament long they’ve been out to prove that this is not the case. They won Group A with a 4-2 record over teams like Team Liquid and G2 Esports. They manhandled the #2 seed out of China, JD Gaming, in the quarterfinals. Then in the semifinals, despite being massive underdogs to the tournament favorites in Top Esports, Suning once again proved everyone wrong with a 3-1 win.

Top Esports were the Chinese team that had everyone’s attention. They had veterans in Karsa and JackeyLove with Worlds experience and a young star player in Knight who was able to rise to the occasion. Meanwhile, Suning has three rookies and a jungler in SofM who has greatly impressed by taking over games with his unique style of play.

If they were to defeat DAMWON, it would be the most impressive run in Worlds history. Suning will need to make the game scrappy if they hope to keep up with DAMWON, but at this point, it’d be crazy to count them out after all they’ve accomplished.

Korea’s Return to the Top

No matter who wins in the final, the eventual champions will have a great story to tell. For DAMWON, they got booted from last year’s Worlds by G2 Esports, and in 2020 they returned the favor. DAMWON was favored to win in the semifinals over G2, but not many expected them to dominate the last team from Europe.

The fourth and final game of the series was the fastest game in the history of the World Championship. DAMWON has been outstanding once they get the lead. Unfortunately for their opposition, Canyon has been very aggressive, and he’s consistently given DAMWON early leads that they can snowball.

For years, Korea was the dominant region in League of Legends. However, the past two World Championships have been won by teams out of China. A Korean team hasn’t even been in the final of Worlds since 2017. A win for DAMWON would be more than just a win for that organization.

It would signal a return to the throne for a region that used to dominate the League of Legends scene. DAMWON has only dropped two games over the course of Worlds 2020, and it’s largely because of their cohesion and macro play. Sure, the laners of DAMWON are talented, but it truly is their ability to make across the map plays that makes them stand out.

Suning will give them a fight, but I believe that DAMWON is a tier above this year. I’ll take DAMWON Gaming 3-1 over Suning.

Pick: DAMWON Gaming (-265), O 3.5 (-305)
